2015 Ecoboost 1L Engine failure - recommendations for reconditioning experts

Featured Replies

HI there,

TL;DR - Can anyone recommend a specialist that can fit a reconditioned 1L EcoBoost engine to a 2015 Focus? Ideally they would come and tow the car (I'm in Glasgow area). Also, is there any warranty comeback on timing belt issues if the car is very much under the 150k/10 year changeover recommendation?

Backstory: My 2015 Focus, which has ~66,000 miles on the clock, lost all power on the motorway the other day and I've had the dreaded news from the garage that they think the timing belt has snapped. They've not opened it up to check directly, only observed that they can move the crankshaft and that the camshaft isn't moving.

This comes off the back of me having the engine service light pop on a few times and the turbo drop out. The light would then reset and the turbo come back on when you restarted the engine. I got one garage to check this out alonsidge a service and they said that everything seemed ok and they couldn't find fault. It then failed the MOT due to an engine service light, which when they connected it to the computer the error code was related to the lambda sensor. Again, the code disappeared when they restarted the engine and took it for a drive - it subsequently passed the MOT. Then the other day the engine died and that's where we are now.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

I've had similar after using the cruise control.  The first time round I replaced the sensors and a new cat, which appeared to fix whatever it was.  However I went to Wales this weekend, used the cruise control again and  the engine service light came on, and the cat light, and there was barely any accelleration power.  I managed to get home but the engine sounds like a 1920's tractor and is waiting to go to the garage on a flatbed.

Nightmare @Rubbercheeks

I phoned the ford Service centre yesterday and they said if a Ford Authorised dealership looks at it they may be able to do something related to warranty. I'm not convinced but going to explore this further.

You may get something out of Ford if you have a full dealer service history.

The majority of the time, these cambelts fail prematurely because people use the wrong oil, carry out engine flushes, or don't stick to the correct service interval. As they are a wet belt, all of these will degrade it over time.

Thanks Luke. I did wonder if they would expect a full Ford Service history. I missed one service due to COVID closing everything (so hopefully they'll at least let that slip!) and the most recent service was carried out by Halfords, so I'll check where I stand with that. I've never messed with the engine myself but I can't comment on what's been put in/done by garages doing the previous services.

But yeah, if anyone knows of a reputable company that fits reconditioned engines let me know - I still think this may be the path I have to go down.

Ford has very strict regulations for warranty and courtesy repairs.

All services need to be performed conform Ford specifications and also conform the specified mileages/periods. Skipping a service or performing the service too late will void warranty and courtesy.

You are allowed to have the services performed by a third party repairer but in case of a warranty or courtesy claim you have to prove yourself that the all previous services are fully performed conform Ford specifications using original Ford parts and oil that is approved by Ford (Castrol is the only aftermarket manufacturer that is approved by Ford and listed in the service documentation).

HI @JW1982 I gathered that may be the case. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
