Headlight Level motors, MOT failure

Featured Replies

Hello,

Just joined the forums as at a lost on what to do, I have a 2006 Ford Mondeo Titanium X with the 2.2 TDCi which I bought for motorway travel from a family friend a little while ago.

I recently took it to its MOT, it failed for the handbrake seized on the offside, found to be a common issue, and both headlight level motors, bit odd. Anyway, I bought two new handbrake cables and motors, fitted them both, and once I had installed the motors they would make a wirring noise when adjust the switch, almost instantly, then they seem to be a bit hesitant, I would adjust them, but then they wouldn't seem to move?

Anyway, I just wrongly assumed that that's how they were, and suprise surprise, failed MOT for Headlights too low, and Healdight level adjustment not working (Both)

I'm at a bit of a loss on what to do? Has anyone had this issue, I've tried leaving the battery disconnected for an hour, didn't fix it, they don't make anymore noise?

Thanks,

Sam

I don’t really know anything about your model but my first thought is that it has it got self levelling headlamps? Are they xenon headlamps? I think xenon has self levelling headlamps

Manual adjustment by switch

Remove the headlight and remove the motor. Can you then move the headlight position by hand or has it seized up.

Yea with an allen key I am able to adjust the plastic gears to move the headlights around on both sides, they aren't even too stiff and quite easy to do.

Just halogen bulbs, there is a manual switch from 0 to 4 to dip them when towing a trailer or have a heavy load in the boot, I don't believe they are automatic, but I may be wrong!

No, they won't have auto levelling with normal halogen headlamps. I've an idea tho'.... perhaps when you fitted the new motors, the height adjust switch was in the wrong position for the actual position that the motors were in, so that the motors tried to travel beyond their end position and couldn't (of course) so stalled. Perhaps remove the motors, set the switch to a mid position and refit the motors and observe for any motion.

Good idea, didn't think of that, will give it a go, will take them out of the clips and and set it to a mid position.
