Engine Swap

Featured Replies

Hi all, newbie to the club.

After many years of Mondeo ownership my Dad has switched to a Fiesta Diesel. It is the 1.4 with 113000 miles, generally runs well but is a little smokey and burning oil.

Now he really likes the car and is considering a replacement engine, but, he does VERY few miles so a diesel is not really the best option.

As I say he does like the Fiesta, so question is. Is it possible to switch the diesel out for a Petrol engine ?

Hope this is the correct section. I did try and follow the links.

Anything is possible, but like most things the problems would be many and the cost just stupid.

So if you swap the engine, the gearbox, the suspension (petol engines don't weigh as much as diesels) then change the fuel tank or at least flush it. Change the fuel pump and remove the diesel filter. Then  you will need to replace the rev counter (petrol engines rev much higher) reprogramme the BCM, ECU, and  PATS security system you will be about half way there.

It would be far more cost effective to just buy a petrol fiesta...

I thought that maybe the case but you never know someone may have done it.

We will have to start shopping round. Problem now is he pumped a fair bit of cash into this one so he reluctant to let it go.  🙄

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Yes, navigating yourself round here can be a problem. Unfortunately this is a sub-forum specifically to discuss tuning modifications by Mountune so not the best place. You would have been fine on the Fiesta forum where your question might have got more visibility.

Anyway, I agree with the other guys on the diesel to petrol swap. However, running an older diesel is not necessarily a problem for low mileage as you have not got all the emissions gear which causes problems on newer cars, so a straight replacement diesel may be a solution, if an engine swap is required.

Just a thought, but has the car been checked out by a competent diesel specialist? Smokiness can be caused by worn injectors, valve stem oil seals, etc without the whole engine being toast.

Hi,

it is a 2012 so has the DPF which has been a problem in itself. He does very low miles so I think a petrol would be best for him.

He has had it in various garages who diagnosed, Turbo, Glow Plugs and DPF, all of which he had changed and a DPF regen'.

Your right a good diesel specialist may be the way but a strip down may be more expensive than a seconhand engine, which of course may have it's own problems ...

Ah, wasn't sure about that - I had one slightly older which had just avoided it!

Good luck with the searching!
