2006 smax 1.8tdci surging-hunting? When revved!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I need some advice please.

my car recently broke down, it’s a 2006 smax 1.8tdci.

when recovered and diagnosed it had a fault with the fuel pressure regulator and injector 1.

I replaced the injector with a second hand unit and a new regulator, it then started but ran rough and was surging on revs and the same when driving!

I was told this injector needed coding to my car.
after a few attempts of trying to get my car to connect with Forscan and failing, about a month later I thought I’d try out my old injector back in to see if it would or wouldn’t start.

it did but still ran rough, exactly the same like it did after I changed the injector in the first place. I’ve tried the old Rev with no luck also.

with a multimeter on ohms I cannot get any injector to give me a resistance reading?

done the air and fuel filters ect and all four injector seals!
many help on what I could try would be great!

Hello Terry,

firstly you will need to get the new injector coded in using Forscan. If your having problems doing that it possibly down to the ELM327 lead you're using. Get one from tunnelrat electonics so you can communicate fully with the OBDII port.

Hi pal thanks for the reply! I bought this one , it has the modifies hs/ms switch and as I said did connect once! Is there a difference??

as I also posted why does it run the same with the old injector re installed after that’s the one it broke down on??

im going to do a fresh windows install in the morning and reinstall the forscan software I purchased and fingers crossed I can sort this ?

Yes there is a difference. The chip set in the tunnelrat cable can fully talk to the Ford OBDII port and works with ForScan. So do a few others, but many have a Chinese cloned chipset and don't work properly with ForScan.

Why does it run the same with the broken injector as with the new injector?

Until you code up the new injector it may as well be broken, the calibration figure will be wrong.

Are all of the other injectors still in there original positions?

ForScan works best with Windows 7, it will work with 10 if that's all you have. You didn't need to pay for ForScan as its free unless you intend to programme keys or update your mileage

The only injector I’ve pulled out of the engine is injector 1. It’s the on starting from the left!

it’s strange how it still runs on the old injector the same as the one that hasn’t been coded? The old injector had even been left in the rain and had a clean up!

the software was a version that came with the programmer! Worked great for half an hour, until I got an error.
umable to connect to ecu when loading injector program.

I was told this wasn’t a Chinese chipset ect but who knows?

injector 3 is lazy I was told when diagnosed, I will put the recently bought injector into there and see how it goes?

I will purchase the cable from tunnel rat and see how I go!.
also can somebody explain to me how to check the resistance of the injectors as I can’t seem to get a reading? The local garage told me there would be a difference if it’s faulty???

thanks for your help everyone 👍

Many body explain the process of checking the injectors with a multi meter as I can’t get any readings??

Hi I have been advised the new injectors don’t need coding as they have a class! I now have my car available to scan using forscan extended license. I have read the injector values

cyl1 ran at 1.289

cyl2 ran at 0.706

cyl3 ran at 1.310

cyl4 ran at 0.656.

it then developed a p0606 code and wouldn’t start unless I unplugged cylinder 3, I then replaced the injector and put a new seal in. The codes cleared and it started up and still runs the same, with the same pressures at all cylinders,

the fuel rail pressure is around 25000kpa so seems ok!
I knocked the bleed off the bottom of the fuel filter housing and heard air being sucked in! so I started it quick and it ran with no issues for around 6 seconds?

why with the air in the lines did it run good

can somebody shed some light on this! I have no DTCs in forscan at all!

As far as I understand it they do need the exsisting calibration figures cleared and the new values entered. Check with ForScan and I think you will find how to recalibrate the injectors

I’ve been to the coding/ calibration section of forscan,

it gives me class 4, 5 or 6, mine are currently on 5, I have tried to change the class to see if anything is different but it was still the same! I did replace all the injectors back to the original places, and still with the same problem.
as original these 4 injectors is what it broke down on in the first place! I’m going to look at the fuel filter again but it was running after replacement for a few months?

Hi all,

back again didn’t want to start a new thread, so here goes with an update of what’s still not right!!!

since having the dancing revs as described I’ve had all four injectors replaced with brand new units, a brand new egr to intercooler pipe, battery has been replaced, fuel and air filter replaced,

and still have the revs problem, smoke has cleared pretty much after the pipe replacement,

my flywheel has decided to go on top of everything else, I’ve been advised it’s causing the crank sensor? To miss the flywheel and make the injectors fire wrong?

please help with this im at my whits end!!
