1.8tdci alternator drive failed

Featured Replies

I have had to replace the complete alternator drive unit on my smax. The alternator seems to work ok with no sign of bearing issues. Now the new unit has failed aswell in the same place. It spins out the rubber part and creates smell and smoke. Any ideas whats going wrong?

You must be unlucky to have your replacement part also fail.

Update. I got hold of a second hand alternator and drive. Fitted it and it hasnt let me down yet. I think the alternator was causing the fault as after i removed it and span it by hand, even though there is no resistance in the bearings it would suddenly go stiff for a moment and then free off again and behave as if there was nothing wrong. Theres nothing smart about these alternators!!
