Brake lights sticking on

Featured Replies

Hi all

My first post here so I am hoping it is in the correct place.

The brake lights are sticking on, on my sons fiesta mk7 1.25.  Even if I completely disconnect the brake light switch and turn the side lights on, the brake lights are on, even the high level one.

If I leave the side lights on and reconnect the switch, I press the brake and all it does is slightly increases the brightness of each brake light. Turn side lights off..... Brake lights work fine.

Any ideas please?

Jim

Have you changed any of the lamps recently? I've had it before where I've somehow fitted the wrong ones and the brake lights will stick on until you turn the lights off.

Hi

no we only just bought it 🙄 are you thinking that maybe a brake light bulb is in the wrong way? or maybe the wrong type?

Am i right in thinking that it isn't the switch though as this was disconnected and they stayed on ..............why is there 2 switches do you know?

It sounds to me like one of the double filament brake/tail light bulbs is bridging both terminals  in the bottom of the bulb holder because the bulb is turned at wrong angle or has a manufacturing fault. I did have one made badly which did this

I've had this before with a Stop/Tail lamp. The filament of the brake light snaps and gets tangled up with filament of the taillight. On older cars with out a BCM the tell-tail signs that this was the fault used to be when you put your foot on the brakes the Front Side Lights used to come on. I don't think that will happen these days as the lights are controlled by the BCM. Of course the fault with the lamp filaments still happens.

I would recommend you replace both Stop/Tail (21W/5W) lamps and the fault will most likely go away.

Cheers folks for the info. I will try this and report back.

Do you think this fault would bring on the high level brake light as well though?

All 3 brake lights are connected together - If one comes on, they all come on.

A fault with a lamp in either of the Stop/tail lights will cause a sidelight to brake light short.
