MK3 automatic what MPG do you get?

Featured Replies

I believe there is something wrong with the MPG i'm currently getting on my Focus, currently get around 20-23 MPG average with short trips and town driving and on motorway this morning on a 220 mile total trip my average MPG was 30.2 MPG...i have even put the gearstick in sport and manually changed up to 6th which for some reason as soon as i put the car back into drive it drops down to 5th sometimes and i just feel the fuel economy on this car isn't great....my dad had a Mitsubishi L200 2.5TD which loved drinking fuel and even that was getting 30-40mpg with an average of 34 MPG on same route yet i have a car that's lighter and has a smaller engine and get less MPG..i'm told its because its petrol rather than diesel but surely a Focus should be getting better stats than those?

What sort of MPG are you guys getting on town trips and long distance? my car is a mk3 1.6 powershift zetec.

This may or may not help.

Mine is a Mk 2.5 1.6 with the older classic torque converter 4 speed automatic box so in theory should be worse than your powershift box.

On local runs I get 34 MPG (better in summer worse in winter) and on long runs easily over 40 MPG. Measured tank full to tank full.

It helps to have all the service items such as filters, plugs, oil, etc. good, with no brake binding and tyre pressures correct. Get that roof rack off!

Let's know how you get on.

ScaniaPBman.

As I remember the 1.6 N/A in the early MK3s was woefully flat. My mother had a 2012 Titanium manual.

As ScaniaPBman said, it's vital that the car is serviced correctly, using the correct parts.

Filter brands don't really matter, but it's important that the Spark Plugs are good AND Ford

Ford recommended oil only.

Use good quality fuel, keep weight down in the vehicle and tyre pressures up.

Check for no brake binding etc.

The Powershift gearbox is quite hungry for power so ensure the battery is also in good condition and clean the paint from the body where the earth straps sit and apply grease to prevent rusting. The main one is on top of the LH front shock tower, then there's two underneath the air cleaner box behind the LH headlamp.

Clean the MAF sensor

Clean the throttle body
