Service / maintenance when changing wheels

Featured Replies

Is there anyone who tends to do some service / maintenance when you have removed the wheels when changing wheels?

What can you check / lubricate / change?

Not quite sure what you mean...but if you are servicing your car and have removed the wheels then check the tyres and wheels for damage, check pads and discs (or remove and clean), check the shock absorber for leaks, springs for damage, ball joint and rack boots etc...just have a good check.

Do you have a nice YouTube link for some of this?

I don't see what you need a YouTube link for? You're only giving the suspension a quick once over looking at everything that's rubber and checking it's not cracked/split. Then checking your discs and pads shouldn't need any explaining lol.

Im not sure how to check it and what to look after. Sorry.

Clean the backs of the wheels. Look for rectangular marks indicating lost balance weights on the insides of the rims. Check the tyres for embedded stones, bits of glass or metal.  Visually check the thickness of the brake pads. Excessive wear on one pad and a lot more muck on the inside of a given wheel denotes a jamming caliper which will need attention but normally they will all be within a millimetre of each other.

Take a look at the discs and ensure that the wear ridge around the outside is not too deep and that the surface is decently smooth and even

The back is similar,  clean the wheels and if drum brakes are fitted I usually spray the handbrake cable with a little anti corrosion spray or give it a light wipe with grease.

Short of going right into it, that is about all you can reasonably do but cleaning the mud off doesn't hurt.
