I just need a basic allignment - don't I?

Featured Replies

When my car is heading straight ahead, the steering wheel is about 20 degrees off center. It doesn't noticeably pull to one side, but the steering wheel geometry is annoying, it use to be OK but I can't remember when it started to go off. I just need a simple alignment, don't I? (It's been years since I had this issue in a previous car and simply can't remember what I did about it LOL)

Yes mines was like that after an alignment on my MK2 and brought it back and they fixed it.

Ideally, you need a 4-wheel alignment, to also make sure the rear wheels follow the front wheels. But, I'm guessing that a 2005 car will have lots of worn/perished suspension/bushes, which is allowing the alignment to "slop" out of spec.

Because the Mk2 Focus uses independent rear suspension, you'll get the best results by having full 4 wheel alignment done.

However, as long as the rear tyres look fine (no edgewear) you'll probably get away with a simple Supertracker alignment which almost any garage can do.

If you have National tyres in NI, they usually have a printable voucher for 50% off wheel alignment, costs vary across the country but mine ended up being £15 on the 'stopgap' Golf.  No it's not perfect, and after 3 years there is a little more edgewear on one side, but for the price I couldn't complain and the steering wheel is straight.

Sadly, after entering my postcode, the nearest branch is in Scotland (!), so no, we don't have them here. Just KwikFit, and ATS but we have a few smaller chains I may pop in to tomorrow and see if they can help without breaking the bank... The suspension should be in good nick as just before lockdown I spent dosh on getting suspension bushes, track rod drop links, and anti roll bar drop links all attended to.

Just want the cheapest option now, simply to get my steering wheel 'staightened'...

track rod drop links

and thats when the steering wheel became off centre.

Its caused by lazzy or poor mechanics making most of the adjustment to one side while not ensuring the wheel was dead centre. Its not hard to put right, normal two wheel alignment a couple of spanners (metal type not human) and someone who knows what they're doing. 👍

Kwik Fit over here often use decent Hunter machines, the same as Ford dealers...you might want to sit down when they tell you the price!

Wasn't tracking after all! Wish it was though as the cure was a replacement rear subframe!
