2011 Mk3 1.6 tdci - engine malfunction service now

Featured Replies

Whilst driving on the motorway just now I had this warning come up. Car went in to limp mode. Switched off restarted it's ok now but what could be causing this?

I'm new to Ford, should I be worried?

The car has done 99k miles

Get a code reader if you have a laptop get the wired and if not and you have Android get the WiFi version. It should track down what is causing the issue. https://tunnelrat-electronics.fwscart.com/

Without a fault code we could only guess the same as you at what could be wrong.

I had that on my old 1.6tdci fiesta. I then bought a code reader from tunnel rat. It said low fuel pressure. I changed fuel filter and it was fixed. Without the code reader I could have replaced stuff randomly at great expense. I’m not saying replace fuel filter, I am saying get code reader.

I've placed an order with tunnel rat. The readers seem good value for money. I'm hoping it's just something simple as a fuel filter

Well the fuel filter is a cheap enough fix and if it has not been done in a while it will benefit.

All 4 injectors are worn beyond learning limits, which is standard for the 8v 1.6 TDCI! But in fairness, they don't have any other common faults.

Did you clear the codes to see which ones returned?  My guess would be that it's the 02 sensor one that triggered the limp mode unless one of the injectors is really on its last legs.

I don’t claim to be an expert on these things at all. I wonder would the 02 sensor error code  cause limp mode? And when the engine is warm? I query this as its only the heater circuit on the 02 sensor and that only affects the working of the 02 sensor when the engine is cold- I think.  But I don’t know for sure.   But I agree that you need to clear all codes and see which return. Some codes can be old and relate to old temporary blips. Shame that dates aren’t recorded with the codes.

Would you say it's not the typical fuel filter issue? But would all 4 injectors fail together?
