How to blood mk2.5 1.6 tdci cooling system?

I have a 2010 tdci and need to bleed air out. Is there a bleed valve on these or do I just run with cap off? I thought I saw a bleeder valve on top of back of engine but might be for something else?

Just realised my new thermostat that I had fitted is leaking from what I assume is the bleeder part? Maybe the bleeder hasn’t been done back up properly?

Was the nipple cap loose?  

I just run with the heaters on and tank cap off on 1.6 TDCIs, but they take forever to heat up so usually have to take them round the block, carrying coolant, and ready to stop immediately if the temp guage shoots up.  The 'proper' way to do it is to vacuum fill the system but I never had a problem with the conventional method.

It doesn’t feel lose so didn’t want to mess with it so I’m taking it back to the mechanic that fitted the new one. Hopefully it’s just the bleed valve left open Although I didn’t think the focus had bleed valves and you just ran engine with reservoir  our cap off

That's definitely a bleed valve, though it looks like it's on a blanking cap where a pipe might go on other models.  The garage might have swapped your old blank on to there which could be the cause of the leak.

I assumed the whole part was new?

The solid part will be new, but often parts won't come with blanks or sensors etc that you either have to buy separately or swap from your old one.

I’ll go out and have a look at it, shall I just unscrew the cap to look?

Yeah, I'd just unscrew it and re-screw it quickly with the engine running to keep the pressure up.  Might even have been cross-threaded so make sure it goes back on straight.  You'll lose a little dribble of coolant but it won't be much.

Ah so best not to unscrew with engine off just to have a look what’s there?

No, because that may allow air back into the system.

Just unscrewed it and back on again but I didn’t feel like it wasn’t on right the first time. So if it still leaks, what is it the garage should have done? Should the stat have come with something else?

The garage haven't necessarily done anything wrong.  That stat fits different models so the bleed nipple cap is an 'extra' part on yours, others have a pipe there instead.  If you think of it more like a pipe, you wouldn't expect them to fit all new pipes when changing the stat.

You might get away with just changing the screw cap, or it might need a new blank & cap depending on which part is causing the leak.  I can't see the blank listed separately to get a genuine part number unfortunately.

So I’ve got the car back and looks like the garage have glued it somewhere where it was leaking. Is this bad lol? Isn’t it under high pressure or will it be fine? I don’t actually know what the bit that was looking looked like

It's under some pressure but not super high.  It does get hot though, so whether glue is suitable or not I can't say.

I reckon they've either sealed the 'pipe' part, or just glued the nipple cap on.  Should be fine, just check it occasionally to make sure.
