Keyless ignition system - can you programanew key yourself?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a  S-Max 2012 Titanium x model Ford S-Max - I have to admit that despite its faults (occasional idling issue, needing new exhaust block, brakes going every few K’s,  I love it as a car. Cracking drive and comfy, and I get all my mountain climbing gear in it!, 😂😂👍

However after some very wet mountain climbs last week, the key wasn’t in a waterproof pocket on my coat, which meant it got exceedingly wet!! Anyway, trying to dry it but no joy so far! I have got one with a button entry and keyless ignition system - does anyone know if this can be done yourself please, and if so where I can get instructions? Down to 1 key now which is proving fun and testing my marriage!!

regards,

Si

Hi. You need to use a laptop and FORScan software with licence (£10) , Connect to the OBDII port using an ELM327 lead (£17.95) and then you can programme your new keyfob (eBay about £15 - £20)

Thank you - i shall give it a try. Can I confirm this is for the push button start model isn’t it please? Do I need a specific key fob type for this? I will have a look on eBay anyway, hopefully it will say 👍

Thanks and regards,

Si

Hi, so I have the USB Module for the car, new key fob, and ready to go. I've read the instructions for reprograming using FORScan, but have to be honest I'm a little nervous - has anyone done this before please? It looks like you have to erase both keys and re-setup again? Don't want to break my car is all as one key does work - can anyone help me with any experiences/tips please?

Regards,

Si

Hi, before you do anything, connect up and use FORScan and learn how to save the files for each module. Especially the BCM "asbulit" file.

Yes you will delete all keys from the car's memory and then reprogramme the keys back in.

If things go wrong you can always just reload the "asbuilt" file and you will be back to the beginning.
