1.6tdci turbo issues

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, looking for some advice. I recently purchased a 2011 focus 1.6tdci with 80k on the clock. I’m having an issue after fitting a reconditioned turbo. It’s blowing soot around the joint between the core and a hot side of the shell/housing. My first thought was a dodgy turbo so had a massive argument with the company who supplied the part, I’ve sent it back as faulty but they claim there is a fault with the engine rather then with their part. (Suggesting a blocked/ restricted exhaust, faulty crank case breather, egr blah blah blah). My question is on a Dpf equipped car surly if there was too much exhaust back pressure, I’d have an eml on suggesting a fault? It would also cause performance issues which there is none of and surely it would also leak from turbo-dpf joint? Old unit had slight shaft play hence the new part but no soot around the joint. Anything I’m missing that can cause this issue?

First step. Get it on A code reader. You can buy one your self and download some free software called Forescan. the cable you need is an elm type. Everyone on here recommmneds buyiing one from Tunnel rats as they are trustable. Should cost around £15 ish. Its well worth doing, the free software is near Ford dealership quality.

How long have you had the car for? Did this problem start up not long after buying?

Thanks for the reply Guy. I only had the car a couple of weeks. I’ve put in in for a cambelt, a service and a general look over including diagnostics and nothing has been found. The reason for a turbo replacement was slight play in the shaft and a bit if oil in the inlet pipes. I know of forescan and I already have a dongle I use. There’s no errors in the pcm module at all, hence I don’t suspect a blocked dpf. It’s showing 23% load.  New turbo going on tomorrow and a new breather so we’ll see.

It's Forscan btw...  'Forescan' sound like a more medical diagnostic.

Is it an 8v or 16v engine?  (Mk2 or Mk3 Focus if not sure?)  Slight up & down shaft play and oil in the pipes is normal.  That wouldn't give me reason to change the turbo unless there was noticeable in & out play as well?

It does sound like a cheap part or poor rebuild skills rather than an engine fault.  But proving that will be difficult.  Did the company have any online reviews at all?
