Oh no.... not the Glow Plugs!

Featured Replies

Good morning all. My focus 1.6 TDCI, which normally starts on the button, is taking a few cranks to start on these frosty mornings. I suspect the glow plugs, but I'm yet to hook it up to Forscan. I've read a few post which suggest these can be a nightmare to get out.

If it is the glow plugs, will it show up in Forscan? Is there anything I can do in terms of preparation to increase my chances of getting them out easier? Any tips or tricks on getting them out would be much appreciated.

I think my injectors are Siemens (9802448680) and my engine is the DV6 8 valve.

How old is the battery?  I'd suspect that over plugs tbh.

Is it rough and smokey (white/grey smoke) when it does catch?

My glow plugs gave up on me a few years ago in the Mk 2 - no warning or starting difficulty, straight to limp mode and error codes.  Garage did have some problems getting one out, so glad I got them to do it, they have the right tools and experience that I don't.

Battery is about 3 months old. It's not smoking excessively though. I'll hook it up to Forscan and have a look for any fault codes.

Unlikely they would all go at once . It’s probably quite easy to check if 12 volts is reaching them, and quite easy to check them individually for continuity.  Without taking them out. Is the battery the right one for a diesel with appropriate cca figure-cold cranking amps. Diesels need more oomph from the battery than petrol.(because diesels are higher compression and because glow plugs are drawing a load of power when the starter motor needs it)
