Focus 1.6 mk1 misfire when warm

Featured Replies

Looking for some help!

Got a Focus 1.6 2003. Its the runaround, but recently in the last week its started to be juddery when its warm on acceleration or going up hills.

It doesnt do it when its cold. Takes a few miles for the problem to start. Runs fine in idle, and out of gear.

My first thoughts was the coil pack, so changed that. No difference. Checked the plugs and leads out, no difference.

The engine management doesnt come on. So in the 'hidden menu' theres no fault codes.

Could be the fuel pump? Fuel line pressure? MAF? The fuel pump and MAF i assume arent cheap fixes. Anyone got anything else to try, and to test as dont want to buy a myriad of things on a menu in the hope that it;ll cure it. Could get expensive very quickly. d be as well driving into the scrapyard, taking the money and buying another runner.

Cheers

Coil pack iffy when hot ? just reread sorry you can get iffy packs from new. Sounds like you know what your doing just go with the cheap options and replace bits, have you thrown some cleaner down its neck ? Try and use a different code reader the cheaper ones sometimes miss bits'

Cheers JImpster.

The new coil pack was only £14 so that was worth a try inexpensively.

Im going to try an new MAP sensor, or at least a used one, cos everywhere doesnt seem to have any new ones.

I unplugged the MAP sensor today and drove it. Still same symptoms, so logically? the MAP?   Can get a used one for around £12 (new range from £26 to 90 but everyone out of stock).

Dashed annoying as its a great little runaround and MOTd till next July.

from memory, i may be wrong if you unplug the MAP and it still does it, its not the MAP, are you clearing codes if any between swapping parts out or disconnectiong the battery to clear memory ? Have you a Euro Car Parts in your neck of the woods ?

Try cleaning the cold start valve, 2 10mm bolts and a plug to remove, i used brake cleaner on it and squirted a bit in my throttle body on mk1 focus.

I would have thought that would be reverse logic 😄 however other forums have said that sometimes car runs better with it disconnected. If true cant tbe that then.

Yeah tried Eurocarparts, GSFCarParts and others online. No stock.

Where is the cold start valve?

Beginning to think its maybe the fuel pump/pressure....  hope not

wrong damn name been a long day, ICV idle control valve usually found near the throttle body, aluminium with a black multiplug into it. change the fuel filter the one under the car if it has one not the paper cartridge thing by the engine couple of quid did it on my old mk1, full of water car ran lumpy but ran , go figure.

I'll have a look tomorrow. There arent any fault codes. says 'none' and the engine management light isnt on.

Had Fords for over 20 years. Last time something like this happened - 2012 Ford Ka at 90k miles - i was the coil pack. Thats the only problem ive ever had with them, that and this one.
