Is it safe to say that if i purchase a 2016 it most likely to have it

No, not a 100% safe as it depends on when it was built, not 1st registered. 2015 is SYNC2

When I was shopping for cars I found most 2016 cars had Sync 2. A few 66 plates had Sync 3,but 2017 onwards are a safer bet.

If it is advertised "correctly" it should advise SYNC2 or SYNC3

Visually, it is easy to tell the difference but I can't remember what as I sold my Mk5  3 years ago, sorry

Also SYNC3 updates "over the air" whereas SYNC2 is updated by changing the sim card that is located in a slot inside the centre console box - which is dead easy to do

That's the theory, but I've seen quite a few Sync 2 cars advertised as Sync 3.

When you see pictures of the display it's fairly easy to tell the difference. Sync 2 has a dark grey/black theme, with the main screen divided into four sections and small icons at the bottom centre of the screen to access the functions. Sync 3 usually has a blue theme with much larger icons along the entire bottom row of the screen to access the functions.

In addition, there might be a silver Sync badge below the gearstick; if that says "powered by Microsoft" that's Sync 2.

Sorry for not repling earlier but what youve told me is exactly what I seen. I've been so close to purchasing a car only to find out it wasn't what I was after.. many thanks... looks like I can browse with a little more confidence now, but looks like I might have to buy something a little more expensive...

That's great Eric, I had forgotten how to ID the difference.

Anthony, at least you know what to look for now

Also, if you know the reg number, you can also PM it to me and I will check the full build spec on Ford ETIS for you (if you don'r have access to it)

I just bought one from August 2016 with sync 3. It's Vignale if it matters
