Instrument panel light on

Featured Replies

Good morning everyone, I hope I have done this right as I'm new here so if I have added this in the wrong place I apologize.

When I was driving my 08 focus yesterday in the daytime I noticed that my instrument panel was lit up without the lights being on, does anybody know what could be causing this ?

As far as I was aware the instrument panel will only light when you switch your headlights on ?

I have recently put some led bulbs into my boot, my footwells and interior light could this be causing it.

I'd appreciate any help. Many thanks

Prob not the answer here, but maybe check the instrument cluster, it can cause all sorts of problems before fully shorting out. I had problems with mine, only it as making my engine go into slow mode despite there not actually being any problem with the engine itself, I've also heard of engines not starting to random lights on the dashboard, I've even heard of radio issues. I was lucky in the sense that my engine still worked, other ppl have had it worse, thats my answer, it may not be the correct one and I am sorry if it isnt, but as I say, I've heard of all sorts of haywire issues when your instrument panel is on its last legs (due to the amount of connections that has to pass through the central cluster.)
I got my instrument panel fixed and no more issues. Its ONE answer but dont take it as gospel, there maybe another answer someone else can suggest. So weigh in all the other answers people will give you. My answer my be correct, someone elses answer may be correct, its the nature of owning a car I'm afraid. But I do think its your instrument cluster starting to short out (die) again see if anyone else can give you another answer.

I see you are in Somerset, like me, are you close to Weston? See Mobile Eco Tuning in WsM, they sorted my old car instrument panel for £150 (If that is being the case but again wait for other answers from others) Having said that though, if your added lights did pose a problem, I'm sure Mobile Eco can tell you what you did wrong now I'm not affiliated with them, so I dunno if you can turn up and say I added these lights and then they charge you or not. I'm hoping they dont as I have been to garages with simple problems and they didnt charge me to fix it.

Hi thanks for the reply, the car drives ok doesn't seem any problems with the engine or anything, I'm not getting any warning lights on the dash at all.

Just seems strange that it lights up without me putting the lights on ? I'm trying to troubleshoot it but I can't find anyone having this same issue, normally the issue is people's instrument panel dies or doesn't light up at all but mine is all fine and working correctly other then it lights up without me switching the lights on very strange.

I am just up the road from you, I'm in Taunton so worse case scenario I'll check out the place you mentioned, thank you.

Is your focus the face-lift model (red back-light to switches), as it is normal for the dash to illuminate when the ignition is on, even with the lights off.

Hi Mark, Yes i think my switches are red back light, it was the first time i had driven it in the day time yesterday so its the first i have ever noticed it.

When i purchased the car my brother picked it up for me, and i work nights so i have only driven it in the darkness.

That's a relief then i was worried something was wrong with it, thanks for that i can stop panicking now.
