MK4 metallic clang when shutting boot

Featured Replies

Hi I've got a MK4 ST Line Ecoblue diesel,  when I shut the boot there is a metallic 'clang' noise from underneath.

I've looked at the heatshield around the exhaust and checked all the bolts I can reach for tightness.  A few were a bit loose.  The noise still happens though.

Has anybody else had this and solved it?

Thanks

This happened on my old MK2 when the heat shield was too snug against the exhaust just bending it away slightly solved it.

As already said with an older Mk2, I had this exact issue recently after getting my rear subframe replaced. Took it back where they put it on a ramp, then tightened all the bolts supporting the heat shield, and they gave the shield a good thumping from all angles to ensure it was silent again! It was doing my head in LOL

Thanks both, it does sound exactly like a heatshield hitting the exhaust.  I'll have another look but I couldn't see anything i could really adjust/bend to avoid them touching. Maybe the exhaust hanger thingy needs a little bit of persuasion to lower it slightly

TBH, the adjustments made on mine could only be done if you lay on your back and slid right under the car, or, get it up on a ramp!
