Engine rebuild/crank replacement

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, excuse a total newbie but I'm in a bind and a rush.

My 2012 1.0 Ecoboost conked out a couple of weeks ago. Mechanic has stripped down the engine and said it needs a crank replacement/new piston/con rod. Quote is £2700. Is it better/cheaper to replace the engine?

Thanks for any help/advice

There's no way I'd spend that on a 2012 model.  Used 1.0 EcoBoost is a potential nightmare waiting to happen.  I'd cut my losses and change car personally.

Why would a mechanic strip down a 1.0 ECOboost that has developed internal engine damage?

Since the bottom end of this engine is considered to be replacement part and not a serviceable part the internal engine parts and service information regarding the bottom end are not available from Ford. Some internal engine parts are available from aftermarket manufacturers but these are only the parts that are subjected to wear (pistons, piston rings, bearings, etc.).

Stripping down the engine is basically a waste of time and money.

Fully rebuild engines can be found from rebuild specialists (many are located in Germany). Prices for a fully rebuild 1.0 ECOboost vary between €1800,- and €3000,-. A brand new engine from Ford will cost approximately €5500,-.

I've been told by those who work for Ford dealerships in the UK that at the moment the cost of a 1.0 Ecoboost engine has been reduced from the standard UK price of £4000 to a special replacement cost of £2500 provided the work is done at a Ford garage. I've been told the work to change the engine takes between 8 to 10 hours so at dealership rates that will be about £1200 to £1400 in labor.

Hi Tom, you're the second one today with a 1.0 Ecoboost that's come to the end of the road. I would think very long and hard before spending what will be at the least £3700 and could well be more. There is a good chance the turbo will have also suffered damage due to oil starvation and will need replacing.

The car is 10 years old, you may be better off selling it 'spares or repair' I know that's not what you want to hear but that is the sad fact of the matter.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies so far.

Total quote for the engine rebuild/crank replacement is £3200 and we are confident it won't go above that. We had the turbo replaced a couple of months ago so we're pretty sure that it won't need replacing again. I just want to make sure that the quote for that work sounds reasonable?

£3200 for a rebuild of an engine that is doomed to fail is a crazy amount to pay.

Have you gone to your local Ford main dealer and asked for a price for a new engine ? As I said above they should supply and fit for about £3700 with a full Ford guarantee on both the new engine and the work. I also think you would be better saving your money and put it towards a replacement car.

What guarantee are you going to get on a "rebuilt engine" and what happens when after all the work is done and there are still problems ?

I wish you good luck and hope which ever way you go that it works out for you.
