First car questions - which and where to buy pollen filter, psf, brake fluid etc? Focus 09 (MK2?)

Featured Replies

Hi, I've just bought a Ford Focus 09 hatchback mk2 I think? I've just bought a Haynes Owners workshop manual and I've been looking to educate myself about this car.

After going through the previous service paperwork and doing some checks I've come to the conclusion that certain things may need replacing.

I think I need to replace the pollen filter but what pollen filter should I replace it with? I read somewhere that I should be looking for an activated carbon one? I also don't know where to find out what dimensions I should be looking at without taking the original one out.

I think the air filter and spark plugs may need replacing as there is nothing on the previous invoices indicating that this has been done in the last 3 years, is somebody able to link me where I can purchase these from?

I've ordered some universal Prestone coolant to top up my original coolant as it is at the min mark - both I believe are an orange/pink/red colour.

There's no indication that the brake fluid has been renewed in the last 2 years so I will probably need to renew this.

And lastly my power steering fluid is just below the min mark so I believe that needs topping up, Haynes manual says I need spec WSS-M2C204-A2 but its £20 a bottle, would it be okay to use this stuff instead? https://www.toolstation.com/prestone-power-steering-fluid/p32423?utm_medium=feed The current stuff is green whereas this stuff is clear but said to be universal.

Goto this link  Halfords UK Car & Pollen Filtes

It will ask for your registration and give you a list of filters for your car

Activated carbon pollen filter is designed to reduce smells coming in from outside.  So it's up to you whether you want to pay extra for that feature.

Halfords as above, or ECP, GSF, etc should find it easily from your reg.  Same for air filter and spark plugs, though you may have to choose those more carefully by checking the 'extra info' sections.

I haven't seen that PAS fluid before.  Not sure which engine you have, so don't know if it's full hydraulic or electro-hydraulic PAS.  Standard PAS fluid shouldn't be used in these, but that stuff does say guaranteed for every system...not sure I'd risk it though!  A rack or pump is considerably more expensive than just buying the correct stuff in the first place.
