Key / Remote Locking problem

Featured Replies

Hi all, newbie to this forum, be kind 🙂

I've recently got a 2008 Focus 1.6i Zetec, with one key. (3 button flip key) I didn't notice at the time of buying as the car was unlocked - but the issue is below.

The remote locking doesn't work - i knew about that at the time but just assumed it was a flat battery in the fob - not too concerned about that.

So car can be locked/unlocked manually. All locks work fine, including boot.

The more annoying issue is when you open car with key, you get a beeping from the dash area until the key is inserted and turned, where it stops. If left longer than say...12-15 seconds, the alarm will go off.

If i open any of the doors or boot before i do the above, the alarm goes off straight away.

I youtubed and found and tried the remote key re-sync sequence of the 4 turns in 3 seconds. I DO get the beep but the red light goes straight off (i gather it's supposed to stay on?) and there is no response from the buttons on the fob. I've tried the battery that was already in, a battery from another key (which was still working) and a new battery, so i'm quite sure it's not to do with the battery.

I've opened the key and checked the inside and nothing is obviously wrong or broken, that i can see just by looking. Contacts are clean, circuit board doesn't seem to have anything missing.

So, i was wondering if there's something else i could try?

I'm hoping there's a different kind of sequence i could try or perhaps something else?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Get yourself a laptop and install FORScan.

You will also need a good modified ELM327 lead to connect to the OBDII port. Then you can check/reprogramme the key. Of course your key might be broken.

Thank you Unofix. I will look into those.

I've managed to ask and find another key for the car. However, it's just the spare with no remote buttons.

However, i read somewhere that both keys are required if a key-relearn thing is to be tried.

I'll get the other key in the next couple of days and try the process again.

Really, all i want to do is:

1) Stop the car thinking i'm trying to break in when i unlock it manually.

2) Get the remote key working on the remote again (hopefully fixing one will fix the other?

Whenever the car is unlocked using the manual key it will always require you to put the key in the ignition and turn it to position two. It's an anti-theft device.

The two key thing was/is for programming the Passive Transponder Chip in to the car. This has nothing to do with the programming of the buttons for lock/unlock.

Also I'm not sure of the exact year (might have been 2008) the two key method was disabled by Ford for all UK models. The transponder chip can now only be programmed in to the car by using a computer.

But i am locking / unlocking the car with the remote key. It's doing the annoying beeping thing and alarm going off thing if i open any other door, using the remote key (which doesn't work as a remote at present, so i'm having to do it in the door.

So you are "not" locking and unlocking with the remote key !

You are using the bit of metal on the end of the plastic bit with buttons on, and sticking it in the door lock and mechanically locking or unlocking the door, just like any normal key.
