Would it be turbo issue?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have Ford focus mk2.5, 08 (08-11 model), Ive noticed that around turbo intake manifold(connected via pipe to airfilter) gathers a lot of oil resedues. I've took off pipe, and discovered that everything inside is in oil. Would that mean Turbocharger seals are gone? Or that's different problem.?

P.s. There is little to no play on turbo shaft, and car is not smokey whatsoever.

If the rubber hose is also coated in oil It is probably oil coming from the Crankcase Breather via the the small pipe that taps into the main Air Intake from the Air Filter. They all do that when they get old and there is not much you can do about it other than cleaning it every now and again or cobbling up an Oil Trap.

Your oil is a bit black, it could do with being changed.

Thanks. Yea, I've just got that car. Need to replace front bumper, light and wing, next will be proper service... Previous owner probably never bothered to service car... According to sticker on windscreen, it was due in The middle of 2019... So two years out of service...

I am thinking of getting sort of engine flush liquid, get in warm engine, let it tick owerfor 5 min., drain and get good quality oil and filter replaced.

I am considering get oil trap. Any guide for that work?

Thanks.

I'm not a great believer in flushing additives, maybe I'm a bit paranoid but I always worry that they will dislodge some baked in gunk and make things worse. It didn't matter as much with older generation engines that didn't have things like Turbochargers and Spray Nozzles for the cylinders. I would prefer to change the oil then change it again after a week or so but that would work out a bit more expensive. The good news is that from what you say, you don't seem to have any Turbo wear.

The Crankcase Breather on these engines is built into the Rocker Cover and as far as I know it can't be dismantled for cleaning or replacement. Even if it was you would still get some blow-by, especially as the engine ages. I just used to clean the oil off on a regular basis when I had the same car as you.

There is a lot of stuff on YouTube about Oil Catch Cans but I'm not sure if anyone has done one on that engine. Given that everything downstream of that point will be coated with oil already it might be a futile exercise to fit one now. If the engine was new and one was fitted from day one, that would be a different matter. Just my personal opinion.

The other problem that these cars can have is low fuel pressure if the Diesel filter is old, so it might be a good idea to change that too. Unfortunately it is a pig of a job on that engine because there is no hand pump to draw the fuel through and the Bleed Valve on the filter is a combined bleed and drain one. I never could understand the logic of why it was designed like that.

Thanks for your honest answer.

I'll might consider your suggestion of two oil changes in short time period.

Fuel filter replacment is not an issue for me, as I've replaced one on my girlfriends mk3 focus (2015). And yes, I've bought  tool to build up pressure(designed for Ford). I will deffinaty replace it, thanks to remind about that, but it is quiet expensive... If not mistaken was about 60 euro.

There is lite ticking noise, while idling. Assume one or some tappets stuck/worn. Not consider yet to open cam cover to investigate it, till propper oil change done.
