Aircon turns itself on randomly

Featured Replies

Driving me up the wall! Especially on a cold morning.

Can't see a pattern to it but I'm not making it come on by turning either the fan or heater control fully-on or, of course, by pressing the aircon button itself!

I can't find 'owt in the war-and-peace handbook to explain it either.

Any ideas? - Thanks, Richard

Focus 4, SDT-Line 2020, manual aircon (NOT automated climate control)

Apologies but am gonna piggy back on this, my a/c turns itself on randomly moreso when i change the flap position knob, usually vertical to select screen only, and it can turn itself on even on a bl**dy freezing morning i  have to look and turn it off as the orange light is on, is it normal ? or should i start rooting LOL

that's part of the climate package ..when the temperature drops it auto applies the aircon to front screen.. only way to stop it is to make sure the heater setting is just before or just past the 12 oclock position

Agreed - normal for these Fords at the time (and maybe since?) Whenever the directional vent is pointing at the window, or you turn past that position - the AC will come on. It's one of those things where they have designed it to try to help you (AC on a misted window will clear it much more quickly) but in practice...if you dont want the AC on, it's a bit annoying!

Thanks all - I'm not going mad then.

Did some experiementing yesterday and there is a pattern that coincides with your feed back, doesn't seem to happen once the car has warmed up but I might have had the heater control further over then the 12 oclock position.

worth noting - when its properly cold AC turns off below 3C (on her Mk2 if the amber star is on the AC is off and can do this at 4C)

1) coz its supposed to be dry air - as its all frozen or its already found a home to condense on

2) because the system can freeze up and get damaged due to wind chill.

Turning on the screen defrost button can pull fresh air from outside to try and remove the misting... and it should override the recycle switch (as that would make it mist up inside more). But of course that's now pulling whatever temp is going on outside in large volumes. So whilst you may see where you are going, you may be cold...
