'Solenoid' replacement

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm looking at buying a 08 plate manual 1.8 tdci which apparently has a 'solenoid' problem which is restricting revs.

Is this likely to be a particular solenoid, and if so, any rough ideas of ease or cost of doing the work?

(FYI, I managed to replace a fuel rail sensor of my other focus over the summer - but that's about the limit of my skills so if this is harder than that, I may have to stick it in the shop)

Cheers

W

Sorry, it's a 1.6 Tdci, not 1.8!

If it was just a Solenoid then the seller would probably have got one cheaply from a scrap yard and fitted it.

In my experience buying a car where someone says there is a fault and saying it just needs this doing, it does not turn out to be that straight forward. It’s a bit like when someone says it’s just had a new turbo or whatever, that is also a red light to me. It often results in a problem because it wasn’t done properly or it was a mis-diagnosis and the previous fault still occurs. If you have the space and the tools and can afford to lose the money you pay then it might be worth taking a chance.

Thanks all - yep, I agree with the thoughts. It's really not a huge outlay so I might be prepared to take the gamble. I  was just wondering if the most common solenoid issue was the turbo booster, or something else (oil pump, water pump, feul pump etc etc).

Obviously the big concern if it is the turbo booster, that the turbo might be knackered as it sounds like they've been running it in limp mode for quite a while.

Cheers

Code reader might help. When my 2007 fiesta 1.6tdci kept going into limp mode 3000 rpm max and reduced acceleration the fault code was low fuel pressure. New fuel filter fixed it. Turbo failure due to gunked up oil pipe to turbo bearings was common on 1.6tdci of that age. But it could be loads of things eg faulty injectors - expensive

Boost solenoid would be the most likely cause.  But anyone telling you it has a 'solenoid problem' probably has no idea about engines and are just relaying what they were told... maybe incorrectly.

On my 2.0 TDCi it turned out to be the boost solenoid and one from the scrappy sorted it out.
