Battery died

Featured Replies

Hi all

I installed a new android head unit into my 2009 focus titanium, now the past 2 days here in Ireland where horrible with storm bara so the car didn't move for 2 days but this morning the battery was dead and i needed a jump

Could it be the new android unit that caused the drain, its turns off when I pull out the key but I've heard some units go into sleep mode instead of actually powering off completely

Any help as always is really appreciated

Niall

How old is battery? Usual lifespan of batteries is 5-7 years.

If battery not that old, you need to get to car electrician to figure out what drains battery. Could be your new radio.

I had once expensive Bluetooth device installed on other car... It drained battery over night, contacted manufacturer, them issued new flash file, witch rectified the problem.

First maybe check if any firmware updates to your system.

It doesn't take an electrician to do a parasitic draw test, just a multimeter and a quick Google search.

However when fitting an aftermarket radio, sometimes the original Bluetooth module stays on all the time if there's no Ford radio to tell it to sleep.

That's true. Once that question been asked, I assume op is not familiar with such procedure. Google certainly will help.

Cheers lads

There's no parasitic draw that i can find with the meter(thanks for that suggestion) , the cars 09 and i bought it 4 months ago so not sure how old the battery is, just going to bite the bullet and buy new battery today, have been onto manufacturer which is Chinese so language barrier and time difference is a nightmare at the minute.

Here's hoping it was just an old battery

Thanks for all the advice and help

It is common for car batteries to have date on them for warranty purposes but depending where they put it you might not be able to see it whilst battery is in car. So once it’s out you might be able to see how old it is

Have a look at the top of the battery, you may have a manufacture date sticker or etch on the battery. The mark, if it has one, will normally be on the top, may be hidden under a support bracket. Crap batteries won't have a manufacture date sticker or marking.

Unless you know the history of a battery, you can't tell what sort of abuse it's had. If it's been allowed to drop really low a number of times, it could be useless within a year.

Check the sides for any bulging and make sure the terminals are clean and corrosion free.

Plenty of guidance on YouTube for parasitic draw testing. Do not attempt unless you have plenty of patience, and time.

First of all thanks for all the help on this, turns out the battery is knackered and the head unit cable was wired wrong, the company sent a diagram of the wiring harness, the 1 they sent had a reverses acc wire, so a quick switch around and a new battery later its an old problem

Cheers guys
