Focus 1.5 diesel 2015

Featured Replies

My Focus diesel keeps putting diesel in the sump no lights on dash engine runs great motorway driving.

What can be wrong ???

Help please

A lot more detailed information is needed before anyone could make a suggestion. For example how do you know that there is diesel in the sump ? How much diesel are we talking and over what period of time ?

If there is diesel in the sump the usual cause would be because when the car does a dpf regen you finish your journey before the regen has finished. Sometimes this is because people bought a diesel that is unsuitable for their use eg. All short journeys.   Mind you if you had bought a 1.0 petrol eco boost instead you might have the blocked oil strainer problem so I’m not saying you should have bought that instead.

I know I have diesel in the oil because I can smell it and the level rises over time I cover around 350 motorway miles a week so I'm sure regen should take place and be completed but I'm happy to be told different.

I have 2015 fiesta 1.5tdci and mostly do 25 mile fast dual carriageway journeys. I think there have been times my oil level has risen with diesel in it but not excessively to cause concern. I wish there was a light or something on the dash to show when doing a regen so I would know not to drive into the car park at work but thrash if round the block until it’s finished. People say you can tell when it’s doing a regen but I can’t. I only know once I have parked and then notice the radiator fan keeps going flat out which I believe is a sign of it being mid regen.

That's strange because my troubles started with the rad fan going for no reason and now it goes off most days after 60 mile drive to work. Temp gauge always seems to be on the low side also.

The trouble is they do it when they feel like it, normally 3 minutes before the end of the current journey.

To enter regen mode, the PCM needs a few markers:

How full is the DPF

What temperature is the engine oil

How long into the trip are you.

It normally doesn't enter regen until at least 20 minutes into a journey.

You can tell that it has entered regen mode by increased idle speed, cooling fan activated, engine tone is a bit louder and I've always found it to be a bit more responsive due to the extra fuel being pushed through.

The way DPF regen works is to push more fuel than is needed into the engine which then gets shot down the exhaust system, into the DPF, catches fire and burns the soot away.

When you find you are in regen mode you should always sit and wait for it to finish before switching off, helped by the occasional blip on full throttle up to the red line for 5 seconds to blow the soot out.

As soon as the idle drops to normal it's finished

Your fan keeps coming on all the time because it's trying to regen but you're not allowing it to finish.

Good quality diesel helps too.

If there's a high smell of Diesel in your engine oil, get it changed ASAP

I have now been waiting for regen to finish before turning off the engine and waiting for the fan to stop, changed the oil and will see what happens next week when back to work. Thanks for all comments
