Rattle now cured - suspension mount broken!

Featured Replies

I've had the most annoying rattle at the rear of my car for over a week, but was away and could do little about it till now. It sounded just like the rear parcel shelf was rattling, but it wasn't, I went over every bit of interior trim, but all solid. It didn't sound like a metallic rattle, but more a hard plastic one. Anyway, my garage diagnosed a broken rear top strut suspension mount and replaced both today. The non 'broken' one just crumbled with 'aluminum' powder rust! My car is once again rattle free, and feels great to drive!

That is brutal. Well that is another fix that should make the car feel better.

The Mk2's really are feeling their age now!  Glad it was a cheap fix though!

Just like it's owner! 🤣

I've had an annoying rattle/knocking from the rear of mine for ages, but it keeps passing the MOT so it can't be the same issue.

It sounds suspension or bushing related because it happens if I'm moving in slow traffic and going over manholes/small bumps in the road etc.

Can't hear it above 15/20mph either because it isn't doing it or the engine noise drowns it.

Any other ideas?

The way my rattle was diagnosed may help. My garage sent a mechanic on a test drive, with another mechanic in the back seat to see if he could trace what was causing the noise. After a 5 minute trip round the block, came back with a perfectly correct diagnosis. It's almost impossible to self diagnose, as you are usually too busy driving, and if car is static, there is no 'rattle' to hear. I'm afraid it may be a 2 man job with both knowing what they are doing LOL

I have a rattle similar to this, does it seem high up above the seat belt? I thought it was maybe where the rear lights are but everything seems ok. But still can’t seem to find it. Might have to take it to the garage.
