Mk 2.5 instrument cluster

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, My 2009 1.8 TDCi focus started giving me some trouble lately. It started throwing up engine management errors, going into limp mode & not starting. From what I read, I determined that it was an issue with the instrument cluster. I pulled out the soldering iron & soldered up the joints but made a mess of one of the joints causing a solder pad to rip off when reconnecting. This left me needing a replacement IC, which I ordered online. I plugged the replacement IC into the car, connected the OBD II cable & connected FORScan but PATS programming function is not available in the list of service functions when I connect (I have the extended license installed). After further investigation, I found that the part number on the replacement IC starts with VP6M2F. The original IC part number begins with VP8V4f. The clusters look very similar & the replacement is a fairly good fit, the guy I bought it from assures me that it's from a 08 1.8 TDCi. Does anyone know if this replacement cluster should work, thanks.

The function to reprogramme the PATS system when the instrument cluster has been replaced can now ONLY be done by Ford. Without the security codes needed it is just no longer possible to programme replacement IC's.

FORScan can programme the keys in if you have a full licence but it can not programme the replacement IC in to the car.

The only option is to tow the car to a Ford main dealer and get them to do the programming. It should also be said that the replacement IC needs to have a lower mileage than the original since it is only possible to adjust mileage upwards.

Can you not use the old cluster even if it entails cutting the plug off your loom and solder all wires directly to the circuit board? Of course I haven’t seen how badly you have damaged the circuit board nor know how good your soldering skills are. I know that’s not a brilliant solution but it’s the sort of thing I might try if it meant I didn’t have to pay a load of money to someone else to fix it and tow it there

I did think of that. My soldering skills were good about 20 years ago, I didn't realise it was that long ago till i had made the mess😀

I don't want to go doing any more damage, so I think I'll leave the plug where it is.

I thought that it was only 2015 models & up that had to go to the Ford main dealer. Guess I better go & get it priced up.

Thanks for the info guys

A lesson to be learnt, if in any doubt, £80 + vat , 1 hour at our local ip re-conditioners,

job done      Not much consolation though

good luck
