Screenwash Reservoir not fully filling

Featured Replies

Hi All,

First time poster and hopefully learning some magic about my motor.

Bit of an odd one this - my screenwash ran out, but upon refilling only about 500ml went in before the reservoir filled, when normally it takes around 2-3 litres. The washers then work fine - is a blockage at the bottom of the reservoir common? If so, any tips on clearing?

Cheers all!

Is this the first time you have ever filled it up? (new to you car), or was it working fine then suddenly blocked?

Are you sure it wasnt frozen (so cold that the water in there was ice and therefore could not flow through the pipes)

I'm afraid he's on the egg nog now, maybe hear back in the New Year LOL

Think with the washer reservoir if you fill it too quickly it can airlock or there’s also a vent tube that can get kinked or blocked.

Hi All,

Stephen almost right - cheeky beer in hand I checked back in hope! Seems this is a really responsive forum 🙂

It is the first time I have filled it, though I bought it from my dad who had regularly topped it up. I accept it could be frozen but in the North West it barely dropped below freezing.

Interesting on the airlock idea, I'll try again more slowly. And if the vent tube is blocked is there a fix?

Cheers all!

It can be !!

Are you a C-Max owner or a Focus owner, just asking since your profile says C-Max but you are posting in the Focus forum ?

I own both at the moment, but the problem is with my focus hence why I posted here.

Not sure what to say regarding Stephen's reply... seems the egg nog is well and truly blowing, um I mean flowing. Happy Christmas

Hmmm I checked this morning and it still wasn't fully being received into the reservoir. So after 300ml just starts overflowing. Feels to me like there is a blockage, any tips on how to clear? A product, or perhaps some tube to dislodge? Is it a common issue?

Cheers all

The washer bottle is quite a complex shape but looking at photo of mine I’d think you could get more than half a litre into it even if it was blocked lower down.

The vent is accessible (sort of) if you take off the leaf screen and the secondary panel below that, comes out under the windscreen behind the suspension turret. My car has the secondary tank you have with headlamp washer cars and the vent is part of that so I’m not sure exactly if the setup if your car just has the main tank.

If there is a blockage to the vent you may be able to fill it very slowly to get water in but may also have problems once you try to use the washers if air can’t get into the tank. You may be able to prove that out by leaving the cap off the tank and operating the washers, just don’t fully close the bonnet while you do this or you’ll break the cap.
