2020 Fiesta - all 4 windows opening on their own.

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, have any of you had this problem, and if so what has been done to cure it?

Got a June 2020 Fiesta Trend, 1L ecoboost/Sync3 as extras.  Mid July 2020 found all 4 windows open with the car just parked on drive.  End Dec 2020, opened car with key fob, sat in car and all 4 windows opened on their own.  Mid Sept 2021 all 4 windows opened on their own while car was parked on drive.  Wrote to Fords then re warranty claim.  Then a week later I opened car, sat in car, no ignition on, door still open and all 4 windows opened again.  End Sept 2021 into Ford Dealer under warranty, couldn't find a problem but updated car software.  No problems since but still concerned it could happen again while car is parked in a car park and theft occurs, or it happens overnight on my drive and there's heavy rain.  Currently parking car in garage overnight.  Mileage is around 4,300 only.  Has anyone else had this problem?  If so, has it definitely been cured and how?

I'm submitting this topic now because it has now happened on my other car which is a 2015 Mondeo Titanium 1.5L ecoboost (current model), current mileage 32,000.  I went to the car yesterday morning and all 4 windows were open.  With the wind and rain overnight the car was soaking inside, front and rear seats, both sides.  I'm concerned as my Mondeo won't fit in my garage, it's left on the drive every night.  Any ideas, it's well out of warranty?  Has it happened to you?

Thanks, Barrie

Were the keys in your pocket at the time or somewhere else where the buttons could have been accidentally pressed. With some cars if you long press the open button then all the windows open.

Hasn't happened on any of our Fords in the last 10 to 16 years from Fiestas to Focus St...

Does this only happen when your cars are parked on your driveway?

If so are your spare keys anywhere where they can be being pressed by a cat or dog lying on them?

Is there any sort of electrical interference such as electricity pylon or cabling passing over or hear your home?

If none of the above and it is only happening at home, a Ford dealer cannot find the issue, the only thing I can suggest is maybe getting in touch with Ghostbusters or similar....🤔

Once happened to me with an Audi, never really got to the bottom of it, but my keys were in my pocket with other stuff so I guess that was the likely cause.

No not had any of those issues.

If you haven't done so already I'd be tempted to disconnect the battery for 30 mins and then reconnect it and see if it cures it.

You will have to reset any settings you have altered afterwards though.

Had it happen once while I was working on a car...keys were in pocket so almost certainly got pressed while bending about.

Are your spare keys in a bag in the car perhaps?

Also worth noting it uses radio frequency...so could be something sending out signals from your home or a neighbour's.

I often accidently unlock my car from inside the house when my keys are in my too full pockets and I move the wrong way, and that is just the times I know about because the car locks itself again if a door is not opened within a minute or so, although I have never managed to globally open the windows.

@Baz52 if the Fiesta is the same as the Focus, you can disable Global Opening in the vehicle settings.

Sounds like global opening - for your own peace of mind for a few weeks ensure that your car key/fob is kept separate from any other keys and not in a pocket where the buttons could be pressed.

If taking some small changes to behaviour solves the problem then you have your answer.

Incidentally, it's sometimes surprising the range at which a remote will operate, if the battery is ok.

A few weeks ago I parked up to meet a friend for a walk. He immediately started nattering and, having been distracted from my usual routine,  I had a "did I lock it?" moment. By this time we'd left the car park, walked down the road and were crossing a river bridge, from where I could just see my car, around 100 yards away. I pressed the lock button and the lights flashed.

I'm with most peoples thoughts on here, that the button of the keyfob is being pressed and held down causing the Global Open function to operate.

Just go in to the vehicle menu on you instrument cluster and 'turn off' global opening in the options.

Does this trick still work?

Anyway. Am I right in saying Global windows only work with cars that have all 4 electric windows? I have never been able to do it on mine, but I've got manual winders in the back. My previous car (Skoda) had the same, but you could operate both front windows with the key.

Afaik that's right, Jim. I have manual rears and don't have it on mine.

We only have 3 door cars and Global window closing works on both our Fiestas.

I understand it only works if all  windows on the car are electric (3 or 5 door), so you will have it but Jim and I have manual windows at the rear, so we don't.

You can see the logic - with manual rears you could still have a rear window open even after pressing the button.

Hi Roger, yes I see your logic on the all windows electric verses manual windows on the back. I can't say for sure that it is the case for all Fords but on mine you have in the vehicle options to select just 'Global Opening' or just 'Global Closing' or of course both or neither as the fancy might take you.

Still it would be sensible to still have the option of Global Opening available on cars with manual rear windows.

With Ford cars that have manual rear windows the front windows are not 1 press up, you have to hold the button, which means there is no bounce back safety, so could be dangerous if global closing.

I have manual rears and the electric fronts are definitely one touch to close.

Hi Guys, I would like to thank all of you for contributing your thoughts to my problem.

I have now made it happen on both my cars, so I would like to say it must be the sensitivity of the keys.  I have been pressing the open button constantly, holding the open button down for a long time, and eventually the windows will globally open.  As I now have an answer to why it was happening, I feel safe leaving my car on the drive or in a car park somewhere when out.  I have moved my keys from trousers pocket to jacket pocket and now hope that it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for your contribution and hope it helps other people who may have this problem.  But it does take a lot of key pressing to open the windows and I wouldn't associate normal accidental button operation whilst bending or carrying stuff, or simply bumping into something doing it.  Thanks again everyone.
