Focus Mk2.5 2.0 TDci Auto - Engine and Transmission Malfunction. Tried Instrument Cluster solder joints

Featured Replies

Hi

2008 Focus 2.0 TDci Auto.

Problem Last week driving along when traction control light came on, followed by every light on the cluster, followed by engine, power steering and transmission malfunction. Then reduced acceleration. Pulled in, switch on/off and OK for a day or two.

Then just stopped with engine malfunction. Would not start -  stating engine and transmission malfunction. Instrument Cluster wasn't showing which auto gear I was in, just a '-'

RAC took me back home, after doing lots of diagnostics for me. All were saying no comms to Instrument Cluster.

Today I have taken Instrument Cluster out, carefully resoldered as had the usual dry solder joints. Installed and still will not turn over, says engine and transmission malfunction. Although it does now correctly show the correct gear and no longer switches between engine and transmission fault when banging on top of dash.

I cant even find where the ECU is located, I've taken a lot of interior plastics out. I believe someone on here said its under passenger wheel arch. Is that right as it means I'll have to jack up car, take wheel off etc.

Any idea what else I can try?

Thanks

On my brothers 2009 1.8tdci mk2.5 focus the ecu was under  left front wheelarch in front of wheel (so sort of under headlight). Accessed by removing left front wheel and wheel arch liner. It was contained in a plastic box done up with shear bolts.  I hammered a sharp screwdriver around the bolt heads to cut the plastic to release the cover.  I don’t know if it’s the same for all engines.   On this car the problem was like yours .  The cause was not the instrument cluster, it was canbus wire or connector problems between instrument cluster and ecu

In the engine bay fuse box there’s a big connector plug.  I understand the canbus pins in that plug can cause problems.  I have put a load of stuff on this forum about two years ago about sorting this out . Tdcipeter has also posted a load of stuff about this also. I know it’s hard to search on this forum.even trying to find stuff I posted myself.

Hi Isetta. Yes I was reading your post last night. You did some truly serious hours in there.
I’ve got a reliable 60ohm across the OBD connectors pin 6 and 14 with ignition off Which hopefully means it’s not can bus related.

i actually took instrument cluster back out and took a resistance reading from pin to next component for all 32 pins. Just to satisfy myself it wasn’t this.

I also have made good all ground connections to bodywork under air filter assembly and big one on top of suspension turret as I saw a video on you tube with a guy tracking this down to the grounds under the air filter

I’m at the ecu now, I’m trying to decide whether to drill out the bolts or do as you suggest.

current status is immobiliser light blinking like crazy - doesn’t crank. Then says engine malfunction. it did randomly turn over one bit didn’t start.

Well. I had to really smash into the plastic box with ecu in.  They really don’t make it easy do they.that box is never going to get used again.

Connectors reseated. They all look clean and dry.

I did notice this big connector near passengers kick plate area. If you wiggle it with ignition on it makes the engine malfunction and sounder activate. Or sometimes drop the power out to IC

It does seem seated correctly though. Clean connectors.

still 60 ohms at OBD port.

Does anyone have ecu pin out so I can do basic 12 v and Gnd checks on each of the three sockets?

OK Problem solved.  I had not seated those connectors in the photo properly in the socket some how... what a muppet.

So basically i did fix the initial problem with Instrument Cluster but missed these connectors that I'd separated when I first broke down in the dark. I did have to use ForScan to clear faults but its been fine (of maybe that was when I reseated the smaller connector)

However I have completely trashed the ECU waterproof box. I need a new one - found one off ebay for £45 so not been too bad. Thanks for the reply isetta. That long post of yours - you have tenacity level 10 rating for sticking with that so long!
