If I have someone's license plate number, can I look up who owns the car?

Featured Replies

An ordinary person cannot, I think so. In my opinion, states only store this information for law enforcement on a need-to-know basis. A police officer can do this, but it is better to have a compelling reason, such as part of an investigation or stopping traffic. Many provided services to others, such as friends, family, or city officials. Perhaps there is a way to find this information on the Internet?

Hello Austin, are asking a question or are you answering your own ?

Is this a genuine question?

The answer is no, a normal citizen cannot find out who owns a vehicle by searching vehicle registration numbers.
Police, DVLA, DVSA, parking authorities and insurance companies are the only ones who could legally find this information from the DVLA database.

Asked and answered lol

Many years ago me dad picked up a licence plate, just laying in the gutter side, me dad nipped into the local police station and gave it to the copper on the desk, copper looking puzzled he asked...''what do you want me to do with that sir''....... Me dad replied back...''Find who the owner is as it's a legal part of a vehicle''..... Copper then got on the phone and within minutes he told me dad who the plate belongs to and the registered address was some 200 miles away, copper jokingly said...''you fancy taking it to him because i'm not it's too far away''

Cop station was in laughter.

I believe in Switzerland you can look them up. Perhaps it encourages polite and considerate driving

In the UK a citizen can not check the legal owner of a license plate, but, you can check if the car has a valid MOT and current tax LOL

For a short while anyone could also check which mot station was used but that was removed pretty quickly. I assume because that would have assisted in tracking down owner, particularly if done in a little village where you might be able to drive around and spot the car or pay the garage a visit and get them to tell you by trick, bribe etc

I suppose you need to find everything about a car by VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). With the help of the license plate I found out the state of the target car. With the license plate lookup, you can get more information on the Internet or with a decoder tool. However, I usually find that the likelihood of detection was negligible in such cases. If something feels wrong, it’s generally better to move on than the later aching feeling that eats you up. Good luck!

This reminds me of Malcolm in the middle.

Hi guys. I am very grateful to you all for your comments and advice. After all, buying a car, and even a used one, can be stressful. Fortunately, I used VIN Decoder and it helped me to find out about the future car all the necessary information that I wanted to know. Therefore, guys who have not tried it yet, I recommend because you can find out complete information about any vehicle that you are considering.

Most people buying a used car just get an HPI check which not only tells them about the cars history but importantly is there outstanding finance and can the mileage be believed.

The small cost for a genuine HPI check normally comes with insurance regarding the information supplied which can be very important if it turns out that there is outstanding finance.

Indeed, many car sites like AutoTrader, and even GumTree include these kind of checks on the car's listings...

Not in this country. I believe in some European countries you can - or could. But of course this is a gift to car thieves and stalkers .....
