Don’t lose you key chip

Featured Replies

A warning. My brother who has corsa yesterday could not start car after a countryside walk. Called breakdown service who said it was because immobiliser chip missing from key. On the walk he dropped key and it came apart. He clipped it back together but did not realise he had lost the chip. It could not be found.  He has no spare key. Car recovered to his house. Cost him £170 to sort it out today (plus extra 30 quid to have a spare key made) . Also a lady I know recently slammed her boot lid down onto her key somehow. The plastic bit broke , she threw the plastic bit away and kept the blade. Luckily she has spare key to use.  But now she sensibly wants to broken key replaced but she has thrown the chip away unwittingly.  So the learnings from both of these is that modern keys contain an immobiliser chip which is very small and goes un-noticed but is of extreme importance .  I would expect a huge number of people reading this will know this but some might not.

Fair warning, this has probably been the case for 20 years or more, it would apply to nearly all cars currently on the road.

Only really old, before they factory fit immobiliser to cars would you have a dumb key with no built in electronics.
