Popping Out Of 3Rd Gear

Featured Replies

Hi there,

i have a 58 plate fiesta, over the last 2 years it has popped out of 3rd gear on over run coming downhill, the first time it happened, i depressed the clutch and went to engage 3rd gear again.

The gearbox crunched and whined, so i changed to 4th, never to repeat this when it popped out of 3rd again.

I have taken it to a ford dealer who first said that they would have to re book it and strip the gearbox and examine it, but when i picked the car up, they said they had adjusted the gear linkage cables and all was well.

also the gearbox is not very smooth to operate, it seems notchy giong into 2nd and 3rd.

Anyone else had any problems like this?

Many thanks

yes, mine pops out of 2nd gear on the over-run. It has done this for the last year, very dangerous!! The Ford dealer told me that "they can't just strip down a gearbox"!

how often does your's pop out of gear? Mine is a 58 plate also

My '58 plate 1.25 Zetec climate was so notchy when bought , with temperatures of ~2 deg C, that I took it back 106 miles to the dealer for 3 days check-up. However we got a mild spell, of 9-13 deg C, but I think they tried to fine-tune the gear-selector cables, and it sometimes pops out of gear now when moving off at junctions mostly (but sometimes with 2nd ), especially if I have snicked it into 1st gear on the move. (You are advised to not engage 1st or reverse whilst moving. They are straight-cut gears with no synchro-mesh.)

So, I wish I had never let the modern minimally trained mechanics anywhere near my car, as I know for a fact that very few of them are trained to do a strip-down and rebuild of a gearbox. My father and his brother were both mechanics all their lives, and apprentices trained in the 1960's were still being trained well, and we only have a handful of those left working now, in our town of 10,000 souls.

Motorcycle mechanics are better able in this respect.
