Oil Life question

Featured Replies

Hi

Having a convenience service soon and MOT  (had its 1st 18000m last year), just curious what happens if the oil life goes down to 0% before its next big service that has an oil/filter change.

Would the dash just keep badgering me to get oil change when I start car or oil light come on?

I might try and get an oil change with the convenience check, but if not was just wondering as my my convenience service is in May and my oil life currently says 57% and change April 2023 so it might not make it to the following May 23.

Thanks

Change it - have a minor service - you can often get a discount of the MOT with a service.

don't skimp on oil changes!

Seconded. Do NOT miss a yearly oil change on your EcoBoost!

Is that the same as a convenience service?, Im going to get it done at Fords as its near me and I get the AA service included as well.

Yeah this is my thinking, but why do Ford think its fine to skip a year.

Once your car passes the 3 year warranty period, it's no longer Fords problem.  They have no interest in engine longevity, just making servicing appear cheaper to company fleet leasers.

The minor service is not the same as the convenience check.  Oil is included in the minor service.

So the 18000 and 36000 mile services on the Fiesta and classed as a major service.

Thought we had done this one to death in your other thread😀:

The Ford service schedule is 18000 miles or two years. The interim is a "convenience check" where you will only get a fluid check and top up, not an oil change. You do get 12 months breakdown extension as you mention (IF your dealer participates in the scheme - not all do, including some of the big groups like EH).

Depends how helpful/flexible your dealer is - at 1 year and 3 years I had the convenience check plus oil and filter change at a reasonable price, but my local Ford dealership is a small family owned one, not one of the big boys.

Ford seem to have tried to copy the VW variable servicing regime. As said many times, that uses a different (expensive) oil and (unless things have changed) when the service due warning comes up, the whole service is due, not just an oil change.

Yeah I was just curious about the oil life monitor, but it evolved into the service again😁

Technically, yes.  But they aren't the same either, more parts are replaced on the 36k service.

Booked it with an oil change, i'm just having the basic/checkup service which is £99, and I asked for an oil change as well. At the time of call they couldn't give me a price for oil change, any of you have a rough idea of the cost for that, Im thinking it will be £60 or so?

Well £60 should just about cover the cost of the oil plus you will need a filter and an hours labour, so if your lucky it should only cost £180 + VAT

Yeah hopefully, mind I need a MOT as well so it will likely be just over £200, I guess its not to bad when you get the AA cover included.

I think you misunderstand my cost valuation. £180 was just for the oil change, that is not including any service costs.

If you get a service (with oil change) + MOT then I expect your bill to be nearer £300

As per the other thread:

Yes, there may not be much difference now the convenience check has shot up in price so much. When ordered my car it was £35-ish (which my dealer honoured at the first 12 month check) so with breakdown cover pretty reasonable value, now quoted at £115 last time I looked on the Ford website!

Last year (3years) I had the convenience check and an oil/filter change for £158, plus the charge for MOT of course.

That makes no sense when a service costs the same with an oil change?

I can always cancel that on the day if its a ripoff

So pretty much the price I quoted a while ago, the cost for convenience is £99 so im looking at £200+ with the oil and MOT.

Not sure why just an oil change would cost £180 when a standard service is the same price which includes an oil change.

The convenience check is a rip off now.  If you want an oil change it'd be cheaper to sack that off and have a minor service with the MOT.  Most of the minor service cost is the oil change.

Yeah may do, I see what they can do on the day.

Yeah, comes out pretty much the same, as I mentioned earlier.

It's really difficult to figure why, If Ford wanted to emulate the VW service regime, they didn't just adopt the same system. (Customer decides which regime to go on - annual or variable - according to their pattern of use, when they buy the car.)

Ford seem to have come up with a regime that baffles everyone and few of us trust anyway.

Must admit, If I was only intending to keep a car for a couple of years on a lease or PCP deal, I'd probably just stick with the Ford service intervals and let subsequent owners worry about it!

At the moment though, I don't know when/what I'm going to do for my next car so I'm sticking to the annual changes.
