Should I get an Ebay alternator ?

Featured Replies

Alternator on my 2009 fiesta is making werid noise in the morning when I cold start it. It almost sounds like a cricket trapped in there. It gets louder when I put my gear in D or R and when I turn the heating screen on. I think the charging is fine as on the volt meter it reads 14.5v in the morning and 13.5ish in the afternoon. But the engine got quite louder under load sounds like bearing is going off.

I phoned up a garage but they are charging £240 for a refurbished one so I was thinking of getting a refurbished one from eBay for around £80 and do it myself. Has anyone got refurbished one from eBay before? It’s an old car and I don’t want to spend that much on alternator 😭

Try a local motor winders, i think thats what theyre called or motor factors, europarts etc. eBay is an option as long as you get a warranty.

just put 2009 fiesta alternator into google most prices less than £100

I have had a few off eBay and they have been fine

Thank you! I will try eBay then 🙂

What about a 2nd hand one? My brother got a 2nd hand one from eBay for about thirty quid. It was fine and still working a year later when he scrapped the car. EBay buyer protection is there should it not work. Partly depends how long you think you might keep the car and miles.

The sound getting worse when its in drive or reverse wouldn't neccerserally be alternator related as they don't put extra strain on the electrical, have you tried in neutral reving the car upp and seeing if you can hear the noise?

I haven’t reved in neutral but I opened up the bonnet to see where it came from and it was the alternator making all sorts of weird noise 😞

That might work as well but I am planning on keeping it for another few years so I probably will go for a refurbished one 🙂
