Advice again please guys. Wheel bearing related (rear)

Featured Replies

so i'll try keep this short and to the point. had the mot done in jan and the rear wheel bearing had some play, car has done about 2k since then and the bearing is now making itself heard lol. anyway i cant afford to get new at the moment but there is a fiesta on a 57 plate (mines an 07) same engine (already had bits from it lol) in the local scrappy.

now here's where the advice part comes in.

1, is it worth me going up and getting the 2nd hand one as long as it feels ok and the drums not too bad until i get new or should i drive it and hope i dont get a total fail before i can get new?

2, should i get a OEM bearing and pay to get it pressed out/in. or for just under £100 there is a set on the well known auction site consisting of 2 drums, 2 bearings and 2 pairs of shoes would that be a viable option!

thanks in advance for all replies.

additional info - i very rarely drive the car hard, fast on big roads with lots of room but for the most part it plods around and with current fuel prices playing is out of the question anyway lol. car gets parked on the flat at home and in work so handbrake is rarely used and other than the one off trips from time to time the cars average mileage is 7 miles around 1am to get me to work and then about 7 miles home at around 11am. no traffic going to work and light traffic coming home mostly 30mph roads with about a 2 miles of 50mph road near where i work.

Wheel bearings have to put up with huge forces no matter how 'carefully' you might think you drive.  A total fail on a drum bearing can lead to the wheel completely separating from the car.

If there's play in yours, and not in the scrapyard one, I'd absolutely be swapping it.  Been a while since I've used a scrapyard but surely they don't charge much for a used drum?

yeah im thinking it wont be a lot and thats why i was thinking it could be an option while im getting cash together for new, only reason i thought about it was because i was up there getting an injector from one recently and knew it was there. i'll try nip up tomorrow after work if im back early enough if not will be monday.

for whoever is following my post here, the one in the scrap yard typically got crushed hours before i got there. i have now though ordered 2 new drums with bearings fitted should hopefully be here by the weekend.

anyone know what the torq should be when doing the hub nut back up, i've had a quick (very quick) look online but not finding it.

It's a blessing that you couldn't get the used bearing IMHO!

Far better to buy new, as you have now done 👍🏽

i couldnt agree more that new is better over 2nd hand but i needed to get through a week or 2 to get enough cash to do them was never meant as a "fix" to the problem just a extension but as it was gone anyways i managed to borrow the money for a couple of weeks so new it is. they are due later today so will be fitted tomorrow after i get home from work 😄
