New manual key doesn't work

Featured Replies

Hi all, I've just had a spare key cut for my fiesta and it wouldn't unlock car and start. Is there something I need to do?

The key cutter came and tried it and it worked so I don't understand what I'm doing wrong?

Does you new key have a transponder chip inside it ?

Have you programmed the new transponder chip in to the car using FORScan (and that might not be possible on a 2012 car) ?

So the key cutter tried the new key and it worked. Did he also happen to have the original key with him at the same time ?

Post a photo of the original and the new keys.

How much did it cost. This might give us some idea if he just cut the blade or also did the programming

Oh dear, you have been well and truly "scammed"

£55 for a bit of metal !!!! (it also doubles as a letter opener)

Your new key can be used to manual unlock/lock the car by putting the key in the door, a word of caution. If you locked the car with the real key, then it will have turned the alarm on, the new key will not be able to turn the alarm off.  You can also use it to turn the ignition on to basic level. It will NEVER start your car without a transponder chip, and then that has to be programmer in to the car.

Some key cutting companies like 'Timpson' cheat by cloning the new key to the same code as your original key. Personally I don't recommend that method, but that's just my opinion. I think they charge about £120.

Then you can go for the premier league genuine Ford key, from a main dealer who will take your soul as a deposit and charge you £199 for a key and programming.

Thank you. I've got the receipt for the key so I think I will take it back tomorrow. It's a local key cutter, so hopeful that he will honour a refund or part refund, in return for no bad reviews.

Hmm ok, I think I may have to go to a Ford dealer as I only have the one key.

Thank you for your help.

If the person is willing to cut customer provided blanks (thimpsons won't) you can get blanks off Amazon for £15 that just need cutting and programming

Not long ago I got a key cut from eBay from a photo of the key for about a tenner. It was fine. Then did the programming myself using forscan . I know that forscan can’t do the newer fords.  I don’t know what the cut off age is.  I was doing 2008 focus

It can do all the Mk7 pre and post facelifts, not sure about mk8s, and all the focuses apart from the keyless ignition ones

I am unclear what the concern of 'cloning' is as I would have thought this is exactly what you'd want in a spare key? Oh, and Timpsons wanted £220 off me for a spare 'fob' key LOL

If you have 2 identical keys and one is lost or stolen you can't then delete it from the car as that would remove both. Also on newer models that use a rolling code, if the spare is not used for some time then it can become, for want of a better word, 'out of sync' and be seen by the car as a theft attempt. It can of course be reset.

The keys should each have there own ident which the car keeps track of each time they are used.
