Question about my new Ford Fiesta Activ

Featured Replies

May be a silly question, but I've only had this new 2022 car for a couple of weeks.  What is the lever or icon on the inside of the the cab (passenger side near the footwell) for, it's has car on the lever.

I don't like playing around with something unless I know what it's for.

Thanks for any reply.

Sounds like the bonnet release? That's where mine is.

Thanks Eric, I had an idea it was but didn't want to play around with it until I knew for sure. The bonnet release has always been on the drivers side on other Fords I've had.

Thanks again for the info.

Yep your right. Bit of a pain as used to going to the drivers side to undo it.

is your screen wash bottle on the left hand side now ?

Sorry to say this, but I find this is terrible, not on your behalf but on the salesperson… did they not do a handover to you ? Surely they should have sat in the vehicle and explained controls, levers, knobs etc ?

I'd be surprised if the salesmen even knew where the bonnet release is...they don't usually get thier hands dirty!

Covid put an end to a detailed handover though.  Wasn't shown anything with mine either.

I was shown everything when I picked mine up a few weeks ago.

Each time we have collected a car we have been shown any new features by the salesman.

That includes pairing phones with sync, setting Ford Pass up, live traffic etc etc. They are usually very good even when Covid was a big issue.

Fair enough.  Looks like it differs depending on dealership then.

You can of course on hand over, ask the salesperson to show you where things are or what things do or RTFM.

They don't supply paper manuals any more.  You can access a PDF version if you have FordPass...though if people are tech savvy enough to find that, they can probably work out how most things function just by trial & error anyway.  It's not really 'readable' like a paper manual, you'd just chose the specific area that you're unsure about...but if you don't know what a button does, you may not know which section to look in either.  On top of that, the manual doesn't cover certain things, including some of the frequently appearing dash symbols on the MHEV.  The salesman also didn't know what these symbols were when asked!

As for asking on handover...I was completely overwhelmed and dazed at the time, and would assume most people are?  Who jumps in a new car where everything's different and immediately adapts to it all?  Personally, I was given the option to ask any questions after handover, though as said with the hybrid symbols, that wasn't exactly a success.

This is the reason for online forums...not everyone knows how to find the information they're looking for, even when it seems simple to us.  The OP could have contacted the dealer to ask, but it's no different to asking on here.

If you go to the link below you can either download a PDF copy of the paper manual or an HTML version which has a search facility.

I have a paper version for my 2018 model but find it can be easier to find what you want by searching the HTML version anyway.

I usually simplify the process by going with a list of things that I really want to know, and equally tell the handover guy not to waste time telling me about how the sat nav can find the nearest fast-food outlet, etc.

Perhaps the fact that even after 4 years ownership, someone like me who has had dozens of cars over the years is still finding out stuff about a Fiesta, points to modern cars just having got far too complicated!😀

So if you don’t look at the online Manual before handover, don’t ask any questions or get offered any advice, you just head out onto the road not knowing how most of the machine you’ve bought works?

When you order a car, while you’re waiting for it don’t you look up any info about it’s features or look at the manual online, gain a bit of knowledge so you’re not “overwhelmed” by it all?

Unless they're switching the pedals around or adding a rudder for steering then the majority of the basic functions for driving will be the same.

Personally, I had done plenty of research into the car before I bought it...online manuals, reviews, Youtube videos, etc.  But I wouldn't expect everyone to do that...and especially as we move up through the generations.  My car was also a very early MHEV - with very little information available on that at the time.  I did actually mention that at handover (having previously had a non-MHEV Mk4), and was just told it doesn't make a difference.  I had wrongly assumed it would be almost unnoticeable (in the same way a DPF regen is), and was horribly surprised by the intrusion of it all...the harsh braking/lift off, the 'rolling stop' as the engine cuts way before a junction, the random dash symbols...and worst of all, the change to the VAG style cruise control, with no clutch cut-off - which was potentially dangerous after nearly 10 years of just clutching in at junctions to drop a gear...and now this car accelerating by itself after selecting a lower gear heading towards a junction.  Now, I know you'll say why didn't I read the manual section on the cruise control...and the honest answer is because I'd never expected it to change after so many years!

I'm going to guess you don't suffer from any anxiety related issues - and as such may not appreciate how overwhelming anything new & different can be, even when you've done as much preparation as possible beforehand.  I did have my new car delivered to my home so that I had time to go through it and check anything I was unsure of before just heading straight out onto the road, but not everyone will have that luxury if they live a long distance from the dealership.

Thanks for your replies guys. You see we're in Wales and when I picked up my car it was strictly masks and only one person inside

at any time. The salesman could only stand outside the car and asked me If I had any questions. Of course I asked If there was anything different from my old car which had only been 12 months old but he said everything was the same. That's why I was puzzled about the

bonnet release being on the left side. My new Activ is a Hybrid and obviously my BIG question  was there anything I needed to know about that, he said "No, just drive it as normal."  So, so far I haven't seen any difference.

Someone was kind enough to put a link on here for the manual which I did trawl through but must have missed the page including

the bonnet release.

I am sorry to be asking questions but it is handy to know that there are people on here willing to help If they know the answers.

Thanks again.

It's funny, but I've never really settled into this car as I have with previous ones (and I've had around 40 over the years, including about 10 Fords) even after driving it for 4 years, so I can well understand what you mean.

Some of the stuff that jars is apparently down to legislation - auto lights that default to "on", ditto the start stop, the message that tells you your seatbelt is fastened, etc, etc.

Other stuff is down to Ford though - bonnet release being opposite side, reverse is exact opposite of previous Fords I've had with 6 speed boxes, then there's Sync 3 (being an early Mk 8, I have 3.0, I believe later versions are better).

Thanks Eric, you hit the nail on the head there. I've lost count of the number of Fords I've had. It was the auto lights that got me at first but whatever you adjust them to they always go back to auto. I guess I'll get used to everything soon but there are several changes

in the latest models for sure. Two things I notice that this hasn't got are Driver Lumbar support and the wing mirrors don't come in when you lock the car, every other one I've had in recent years has had both.

Probably best that you leave well alone, if you can't identify a release lever it's anyones guess where you'll put the screenwash.
