Can't move the gearstick into second from higher gears?

Featured Replies

It happened fairly suddenly, I was never hard with the gears, smooth changes etc and about last week I started having an issue with second gear. Sometimes when I'm coming from a higher gear, I can't shift the gear stick into the second gear position, like something is in the way and I'm scared of snapping it. Goes in smoothly from first and usually when I double clutch, sometimes have to do it again because its still stuck. Any ideas?

More than likely the synchro is failing, not uncommon on these, especially 2nd.

If you rev match (high revs as dropping from a higher gear) then it'll probably slot in ok, or double declutch as you have been doing.

Can be repaired at a transmission specialist, or replaced with a used box, (although that may be just as bad).

do reckon repairing it is expensive? read somewhere it could just be the transmission fluid, the car has 85k miles so it might be worthwile to check that before going to a shop, unless that's incorrect then I'll take it to a transmission specialist on monday

Personally I'd take it straight to a trans specialist to ask their opinion.  They may suggest a fluid change first, but it's very unlikely that old gear old would only affect one gear in this way.

It won't be a cheap fix if it is the synchro unfortunately.  Looking at a few hundred for repair, plus a few hours labour to remove and refit the 'box, and while it's out it'd be worth replacing the clutch at the same time.

what do you think the total cost would be? It's my first car so I have no idea how much it would be at all.. I'm also not exactly swimming in money at the moment so could driving like this break any other components/be dangerous at all?

If you can escape from the garage with the gearbox repaired and the clutch replaced for under £1000 you have done well !!
