Auto stop start

Featured Replies

To get the auto stop start to work more regularly would you reset the bms

It's not resetting the BMS, it more altering it to allow the battery to charge to a higher state. This has been covered numerous times on this forum, so if you search for 'Stop Start Issues' on this forum you'll see how it's done.

Or, if you're really lucky, our resident Start/Stop expert, @unofix may drop in to explain everything...

I'll try and give you the quick version. 🤣

So due to emissions and save the dolphins, cars have been fitted with Stop/Start. At more or less at the same time also to reduce emissions and save more dolphins cars had there smart charging systems 'tweaked'  so that the battery is only ever charged to a maximum of 80% of capacity. Big problem is the two things work against each other.

When your car battery State Of Charge (SOC) falls below 70% the brains of the car starts to disable things to save battery power. One of the first things to become disabled is Stop/Start, followed closely by the heated front screen.

To fix the problem you can use FORScan software and adjust the SOC to 90 or even 95% and for most people this is enough to keep the Stop/Start function working. You do need to charge your battery fully with a smart battery charger @StephenFord has a recommendation I think.

So, change the SOC to 95%. Charge the car battery for 12 hours, make sure the negative battery charger lead is connected to the chassis and not the battery terminal and you can once again begin to enjoy the pointless annoyance of the Stop/Start system. 👍

And yet I hardly ever see any dolphins on the M1.

that's because your Stop/Start system isn't working 🤣

hi,i had a tempremental stop start system on my 2015 focus.i followed a hunch, and replaced the battery monitor sensor cable,(cost about £50). the stop start has worked perfectly since.

Did the BMS reset and the 90% trick with FORSCAN, lasted a week, then went back to not working. Dealer service later, they said they reset/updated something, been working fine since.

Aahhh yes, that 'something', it effects many cars but if you get the dealer to reset, or update the 'something', it often works 🤣

That 'something' is often they stick the battery on rapid charge for a few hours and hope it does the job long enough to keep the customer happy for a couple of weeks 😉

That reminds me of the days when people often remarked that they'd get "something" done if only they had one of these.

I'm actually sitting here laughing! I use to have one of those coins which I often passed round when I gave out training sessions - haven't see one in years!

I used to keep a small stock at work to award to people who said they would respond to my request when they got one. Usually they got the message!😀

I have a mk3 2016 Focus 3, 1.5 TDi, 83k, and do all my own maintenance.

I am wondering why so many people are worrying that their stop start isn`t working! I do my best to remember to turn it off as part of my cockpit drill !

I believe that manufacturers only engineered it in a bout of fright to get marginal emission improvement under test conditions, probably with no   improvement on the road. I have a turbo diesel which do not like to be stop started, as does any engine with a turbo. The cost of more frequent new silver chloride extra heavy duty batteries, and starter motors etc would soon eat up any supposed savings. What`s wrong with the ignition switch if delayed in traffic?

Mine now at 3 years isn’t as sensitive as it was, I need to hold the foot brake for a couple of seconds for the auto hold to engage then another second or two for the S/S to kick in . Actually works very well. Turning the ignition off manually at lights etc I mean it’s the same thing but it’s not something I ever did with other cars without S/S

He speaks the truth !!  You will now be assigned a fast pass directly to Hell, do not pass 'Go' and do not collect your save the dolphins badge 🤣

3 years the S/S has worked on mine. Got used to it , didn’t bother me. Last few months I’ve been switching it off every journey. Could do without it tbh. But was previously getting 370-400 miles out a full tank. ….. now getting 320-330 miles 😳

Costing me money. Only thing that’s offset it a bit is petrol down to £1.39
