Fiesta clunk when turning steering wheel

Featured Replies

Hello, my 2007 fiesta zetec s petrol has developed a clunk/pop in the steering over the past few months.

It only happens when I first move the steering wheel after parking the car for a while, then for the rest of the drive no clunk until I leave it parked and come back then it clunk's again.

I have replaced the track rods and rod ends, new top mount bearings. Tightened all suspension bolts and everything is good.

It feels like it comes from the floor and the quicker I move the steering wheel, the louder the clunk.

Could this be the steering column that needs a regrease?

Mk6 steering racks and front top mounts are not the best. Might be worth checking there is enough power steering fluid and look for leaks on the rack. and perform an inspection of front suspension as well 👍

Hope that helps

Hi mate, cheers for the reply, I have replaced both front mounts trying to solve this but hasn't made any difference. Fluid is new and no leaks anywhere. Seems very odd. It drives nicely and has no play in the steering so I'm not sure. It only clunk's after parking then for the rest of the drive there is no noise at all. I got under the car the other day and checked all the suspension parts and everything is good with nothing obvious. Track rods are new and made no difference to the clunk.

I have heard that it could be that the steering rack lash needs to be adjusted, its worth a try.

Any idea which part of the rack the adjuster is as there seems to be 2 different places on the rack

Top mounts on the front of both my fiestas are awful and nock a lot at low speeds with sharper turns. Good you got that sorted 👍

I would not be able to tell you which one it is without more research. Haynes manual is always a good place to look and can be found free online usually. I don't want to incorrectly advise you.                                However I'm not sure if a mk6 fiesta steering rack is even adjustable 🤔 may just be worth replacing it. Which is a much more straightforward process.

Here is a link to a free workshop manual, in case you need it. hope this helps 🙂

Hi mate, cheers for the reply, i looked into this and found out that the top nut circled in the picture is the lash adjuster and its is recommended to adjust every 50k miles. I will adjust this and see if it solves the clunking. Will let you know how i get on 👍

Cheers for that link aswell, really appreciate it 😁

Just to update this thread, I seemed to have fixed the clunk while turning the wheel. It was the drop links. One of the drop links ball joints was really tight to move which was probably binding the wheel. Left it overnight and come back this morning and no clunking at all so hopefully all is good now 👍😁
