Leak in engine

Featured Replies

Hello there

I’ve got a 2015 1L eco boost, unfortunately today my engine service light came on, and cut out, I had the breakdown service team out, and it it’s apparent I’ve got a leak somewhere on my pipe work it’s going to down the down pipe on the exhaust, I’ve topped up my coolant and it was still dripping where the Down pipe is, seems some crystlisation is formed.

any idea what might of caused this or best to rectify.

Can you post a picture or two?

Coolant leaks on the 1.0 often end in disaster but it sounds like you may have been lucky this time.  Need a picture to confirm which part is leaking though.

Hi Tom,

many thanks for getting back, I’ve left my car with a Ford dealer but didn’t take any photos. As the AA took some.

it seems like the coolant leak is coming from the down pipe on the exhaust pretty central on the Down pipe.

I had literally filled my water coolant back up and it had gone back within a matter of minutes.

it does seem like the leak is mainly coming from the exhaust which makes me think it’s worse than first feared

Thanks James.  I doubt the coolant is coming from the exhaust itself but think that perhaps the turbo pipes have corroded?  Not many go all the way through before being replaced or cleaned & painted to stop the corrosion going any further, but a few do.  There is a large thread regarding these pipes on here -

There was also a less common fault on these, where the exhaust ports in the cylinder head corroded, which would allow coolant into the exhaust.  However, I believe that was on earlier engines, and no longer an issue by 2015.  Please do keep us updated with the diagnosis from the garage.

Hi Tom,

Apparently there’s a crack in the coolant connection pipe? Is that a good or bad thing.

thanks James

If it's just an external coolant pipe then it should be an easy fix at least.

Sadly not, due to severity of the crack it might be not engage with the engine they have pressurise it slowly.

been quoted around £390 if not might need a new engine so not great

That is the problem with losing coolant on a 1.0 EcoBoost unfortunately.  They quickly overheat and wreck the engine in most cases.

Just changing a pipe shouldn't cost £390 though.  Do you know exactly which pipe it is?

It begins with D the pipe can’t remember the exact name, but they need to out my catalytic convertor and then fix the damage.

I am hopeful Ford might be able to cover the cost but it’s anyone guess.

shame the cars are so good just this one problem causes so many issues for people
