Mk6 - Valve Clearance Adjustment

Featured Replies

Mk6 - 1.4 Petrol Duratec 2006.

Conflicting info about this engine in terms of adjusting valve clearances.

Does it use solid lifters and shims?

Or can clearances be adjusted using a screwdriver and socket set?

Will I need special tool to remove shims, if I don’t want to remove the camshafts to do the job?

TIA.

The 1.4 and 1.6 Duratec Petrol engines (including the TI VCT)  has solid valve tappets without shims,

The valve clearance needs to be adjusted by changing the complete valve tappets. (which are available in about 50 different sizes). The valve clearance needs to be checked (and adjusted if needed) at the same interval as the timing belt. To change the valve tappets it is necessary to remove the timing belt and camshafts.

Thanks. That’s great. Good to know so I’m not buying tools or opening the engine up to find that I can’t do a job without dismantling the top end.

Timing belt was done 35k ago. So won’t need doing for a while. Based on the mild clackity-clack from the engine, I don’t think they did the valve adjustments.

But I can live with it.
