General Electric Module Issues??

Featured Replies

Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me if this is the correct GEM serial number for a ford fiesta Mk6 Steel II 1.25 petrol 5door. The module serial number is 6S6T-15K600-BL. I'm wondering if this is the original module from the car or if it has been replaced. I've been having a number of electrical issues.

1. The intermittent wipers raise up but then won't wipe back down causing them to be stuck upright.

2. The boot release button does not work, however the key fob works

3. The passenger side door does not lock all the time, I have to open and close it until I get lucky and I can lock the car. It also shows up on the dash display that it's open, until I get lucky with a close and I can lock it.

I've ran the ford gem test routine where you test the input from the wipers, boot release, indicators etc. The inputs from those switches to the gem work fine, so I think my issues are from the gem output to the individual components???

Any help would be great thanks

Hello Kevin, you have 3 separate faults and only one of them is possibly related to the GEM.

A 1: Wipers. The control signal for the wipers does go via the GEM but the fact the wipers go up and then don't come back down is more likely a fault with the self park switch in the wiper motor. When power is applied to the wiper motor it moves away from the park position, then the circuit continues via an internal switch inside the motor. If when the wipers return back to the park position there is still power commanding the wipers on then the whole process starts again.

A 2: Boot switch. This is a very well known and common problem. The small contact switch inside the handle fails. You can buy a complete replacement on eBay for about £15. They are very simple to replace.

A 3: Passenger Door Lock. Again a fairly common fault. Deep inside the door latch assembly is a small microswitch. This tells the central locking that the door is fully closed and it can be locked. When the switch starts to fail it stays in the open position, this gives the warning on the dashboard that the door is not closed, it is also used to tell the Alarm system that the system can be turned on. The best option is to replace the door latch assembly with one from a scrapyard as it is very difficult to get the latch apart and replace the switch.

Thanks a lot Unofix, saved me from going down a serious rabbit hole.

Just one thing, for the boot release switch issue, what do you mean by the handle? I only have a push release button on the dash (doesn't work) and the remote key button  (works). I can also open it by inserting the key

Opps !!

I forgot your Fiesta has the manual key operated tailgate release, I was thinking of the later model.

So if the keyfob tailgate release is working fine then a simple check of the button on the dashboard is what's needed. I know it will be awkward but you need to either try and remove the button from the dash, or at least remove the connector from the back of it.

Once you remove the connector there will be only two wires for the tailgate release. Just a bit of wired to short those two wires together. If the tailgat opens then you have a faulty switch, if not you will need to check the wires with a meter and see if you have any voltage. Let me know what you find and I'll talk you through the fault finding if you need help.

Ok so, I checked the voltage in the wires, and for continuity within the switch. Everything reads fine.

Now for the ensuing confusion (at least for me!). I checked for videos for similar issues and came across a video which showed someone with a non functioning boot release button locking and unlocking the car from the inside using the driver's door handle. The handle can be pushed inwards to lock the entire car, and pulled again to unlock. The person locked and unlocked the car a couple of times in this way and then pressed the boot release button. Sure enough the boot release button started to work.

I tried this on my car and now the boot release button works. I'm not sure if this is a permanent fix though.

Any ideas as to why this worked, or if my passenger door lock issue could be related in a similar way?

Thanks again for your patience, I'm new to this stuff.

Hi Kevin, that was a good fix with the tailgate release button. I'm not sure how it could happen but it would seem the door lock and the button disable got out of sync.

When you lock your car the tailgate release button is disabled, so that if someone broke a window and reached in to press the button it would not work. I can only imagine that possibly through a flat battery or by jump starting the car sometime in the past that it got mixed up.

Very pleased that you have been able to get that sorted.
