Motorway speed limit reduction and Sunday driving ban to tackle reliance on oil suggested

Featured Replies

The International Energy Agency has proposed a ten-point plan to reduce global demand by 2.7 million barrels a day.

I can't see a ban on Sunday driving in cities working. What about people who need to get to work? Train services are notoriously unreliable on Sundays because of "essential track maintenance" and, certainly in the case of Great Western Railways, not enough drivers who want to work on those days. Where would the ban apply - in the city centre, surely not in the outskirts? And all cities? My own town of Reading is sometimes described as a "city", though its applications for city status have been rejected three times IIRC. Would there be exemptions for key workers? How would the ban be enforced?

I recall fuel shortages back in the 1970s, with ration coupons (that were never need) and a suggestion that cars with even numbers alternate with those with odd when it came to the days on which they could drive. (I can't recall whether it was the first or the last number that would have been the determinant; I do remember the registration of my MGB: BOU 634K.)

And enforcement?

A ban on Sunday car use would be interesting - my wife is a lay preacher, and being a Christian country the services are usually on a Sunday morning. Though I guess half the congregation - most of whom are elderly - wouldn't be able to go either, apart from those she runs a taxi service for ...

They can introduce whatever bans they wish.

It's actually policing them that's the issue. There isn't enough Police to do their current job let alone enforce a driving ban on Sundays.

What's next...a no breathing day?

Breath in on a Monday , out on a Tuesday etc. 😂😂

Just  read the article, ok work from home 3 days a week. I'd quite happily work from home 3 days a week if my company provided a ramp, and deliver/ collect 15 vehicles a day.mmmm. that may not save any oil . Ok ,next idea?

Oh, and why 6mph reduction and not 7 or 5

Policing a ban on a certain day is no issue - there are plenty of ANPR cameras around!

Not round by us there isn't, may be in towns. Us in the rural can joy ride all day on a Sunday.
