I'm not sure what you're trying to remove, there is no MAF on this engine.

When I checked Google they point to the front of the throttle body as being the MAF sensor. Only had this car a week and thought I would do a service.photo attached off Google.

That's not true I'm afraid.  The black plastic part there is just covering the cogs between the electric motor and the throttle flap.

Similar to @stevegbr I’m trying to locate the MAF or at least the part that functions as this part on this particular model with no joy. Didn’t know if this plug that connects to the air box served such purpose? Haynes manual seems next to useless. IMG_5378.thumb.jpeg.25cf4bcbec58546b1afdd7965218cae4.jpeg

There isn't a part that functions as a MAF on these.  The closest you'll get is the tMAP sensor which is located under the plastic intake manifold.

The plug on the airbox is just a small breather hose from the cam cover.

That’s frustrating, thanks for the reply. I  thought I’d found the solution to my issue. I’m experience poor drivability issues such as engine stalling (when engine is cold) or revs dropping, hesitation during acceleration. Already checked air filter which seems fine.

@cattcom try clean out the throttle body see if that helps if you have changed anything on the engine like sensors you may need to get the codes cleared in a garage, I had the same fault but with a fiesta. Unfortunately for me it was the PCM so sold the car

Like Steve I have the same problems with my 1.8 duratec, stalling when cold and revs rising and falling continuously when dropping to tick over, I also assumed it was the MAF sensor, but if this engine does not have one ???  Has anyone resolved these issues ? Could you advise ? Kind regards Cam

On that engine I believe you have two small solenoid valves controlling the swirl flaps and I think egr. These have been known to fail but I cannot remember the symptoms.

maybe worth checking as a simple fix if this is the case.

test your MAP sensor.  It's under the inlet manifold, you can see wiring going to it if you look down through from the throttle body location.

Large arrow is the MAP sensor, small area is the wiring loom.  Torx T20 gets the screw but it's a pain of a job to remove.

Also check the swirl flap solenoids which sit just below the battery.  They have 4 valcuum hoses coming to and from them.

is actually a Torx T25 for the screw.

@Bar72 how would you test the MAP sensor? Same goes for the swirl flap solenoids? Do you need to check the vacuum devices are working correctly too?

When I removed the intake manifold I found there were 2 sets of swirl flaps each controlled by a different solenoid / flaps on separate shafts.... one is visible the other is contained within intake manifold but cannot be seen / accessed.

My car seems to run OK but think it could be better. The acceleration is very flat until it reaches about 4500rpm and then it accelerates much quicker. Seems to just open up and accelerate when it reaches this point for some reason?

Any advice please let me know.

Thank you

Hi any ideas on the above or would it better to start my own thread? @Bar72

Not been on for a while, means my Focus has been behaving 😂

Swirl Flaps aren't a problem on the later Mk2's, at least, the manifold was revised and less likely to eat themselves.

Testing MAP sensor:

Testing the solenoids:

I'd check the MAP sensor first, especially if check engine light not on.
