Turbo Questions

Featured Replies

Hi

I have my first turbo car Ford ST and need to understand how this works if anyone can assist

So I'm in normal mode (not tried sport yet) and the turbo gauge shows a top end of 30psi
If I'm cruising around might pop into 1-2 psi or heavy acceleration 15-16psi

1 should the psi go to 30?
2 should turbo go back to 0 when you get to speed and level off or hold at a psi?
3 just cruising along gentle it can sit at 0 or even minus

Thanks for your help above question's I'm guessing silly questions

I didn't know the ST had a Boost Gauge on the Dash.

The figures don't look unusual to me, the Turbo does very little most of the time in a petrol car.

I have seen my Pre-throttle MAP (Boost) go up to near 30 very briefly on my 1.5 Dragon engined non ST but that was when Live Monitoring with FORScan. FORScan takes atmospheric pressure into account, your gauge may not.

If the Boost was not as expected then I'm sure a fault would come up on the dash. If you are worried then get yourself set up with FORScan, you should be able to able to Live Monitor the Desired V Actual Boost Pressure as well as the Desired V Actual post throttle MAP.

The Boost may be different from your gauge as mentioned earlier.

Thanks for the reply

I’m  not worried just trying to get my head around what’s going on and what’s normal etc.

tried sport mode and put a smile on my face with turbo got to 12psi, and love the power

noticed to get crackles and pops it has to be in sport and I’m guessing revs above 3K not sure how you get them driving (perhaps need to rev a bit higher before gear change, always been careful not to push it in past)but parked nice sound, any tips on obtaining a pop when changing gear appreciated unless I’m not hearing it in the cabin 😂

Also do I need to allow the engine to idle before turning of the engine? Saw on the net that some say yes some say not needed on the ST

Now I’ve run car in having a little fun

I'm not sure about that side of things, but I'm sure some ST owners will be able to help you.

It was always good practice in a Diesel car to do that, probably less so in a Petrol one. If you car has Start/Stop, and even if it doesn't,  then it is highly likely that the Turbo is water cooled as well. Having said that I still let my car Idle for a short time after a hard drive.

As you can see from the boost gauge, the turbo isn't boosting by the time you've completed a slow parking manoeuvre...so there's really no need to leave the engine running for turbo cool down imo.

Max boost is reached at a certain rpm for  whatever gear, it won’t keep that boost do will drop off. At low revs or can and will show lower or even 0, at idle it can shoe a negative reading as the throttle is shut and the engine is making a vacuum at the manifold.

What you’re describing is perfectly normal.

leaving the engine to idle isn’t really needed, just drive off boost for a short while, last couple of streets before home etc. the reason to idle was to get the turbo down to a low rpm so when you switch the engine off it still has some oil flow before it stops rather than switching it off when it’s at full speed (racing, track day etc) when the turbo could be at 100k rpm and take longer to stop without oil flow.

it’s nice to have gauges but people don’t know what they show and worry.

enjoy the new car, did you get green? Most seem to be, lol.

Thanks very much for your breakdown, indeed guess it’s best to enjoy the power and the pull and ignore the figures, interesting how it works

any tips on driving to get the pops bangs on changing gear etc best revs etc

not green if been a few years younger maybe lol, I do like the new seats though
