S-Max newbie!

Featured Replies

Hey!
I’ve just put down a deposit on a Ford S-Max 2009 costing £4950. It’s done 85k miles. We’ve been told by the dealer it has a full service history and will have another service and health check before we collect. Having always had a newer cars I’m worried of the age, the reliability and the cost of future issues. Is this a good deal? Also does it come with isofix?- The advert has been removed due to our deposit so I can’t check this. Thanks in advance!

Hello Tracy, your new car will be just as reliable or un-reliable as a much newer car. There are hundreds of posters on this and many other forums who have 2017,2018,2019 cars with totally scrap engines and the cost to fix them is often more than what you are paying to buy your car.

The best advice I can offer is pay for a vehicle history check (about £35) with a company like 'Car Vertical' or one of the many others you can find on line. It will give you a lot of previous history information like mileage and MOT's as well checking that it's not been an insurance write off.

If it comes with full service history it could well be worth contacting the last two or three garages just to check that they did actually service the vehicle. There has been a recent case on this forum of a poster finding out there service book and history was counterfeit. That's not common but a few phone calls and you can easy check.

Make sure that the obvious is in good condition like the tyres and if during the warranty period you have a problem don't be afraid to politely ask the garage to check the problem and repair. Always put any issue in writing (a quick e-mail will do) just so that there is a record.

Finally the price seems just a little high, but given it is from a garage/dealer then probably about right.

Good luck, and enjoy your new car.

Is it a diesel? Being a 2009 car the Timing belt, tensioner, pulleys, water pump, aux belt (fan belt) should have been changed in 2019. Make sure there's proof of that in the service history/paperwork. If not then you may want to factor in any prices negotiations and then getting that changed asap. (My 2.2 diesel Mondeo cost me £600 from a Ford dealer last year)
