It's something I just can't understand... The hatchback model is fine, as it's identical to the UK model that we all know and love (I hope anyway!), but the sedan (saloon) is just ugly in my opinion. Unless they stop producing the Taurus, I don't see any point for it... What's your opinion ?

Think the Sedan looks similar to a Y-reg Focus Saloon in my opinion. It is probably practical over in America and for families, but personally, I prefer my Fiesta!

Yeah! I think the wheels are SOOO small! In the wikipedia pic anyways!

Whats the point of these posts at all?

The Taurus is a completely different class of car.

Its like saying should ford in the uk have both the Fiesta and the Mondeo?

I know youre only 14 ,but you really need to think older and somewhat more sensibly if you are going to make posts like this, otherwise you are going to make yourself look very silly.

Well if the Fiesta starts being made here in Saloon form, it will be just the same size as the Mondeo, and the main engine will be a 1.6... Like the Mondeo. But yes, I get your point, it's good to have a choice between two saloons, but I just think their a bit similar. They could keep the Fiesta and add bigger engines to the list and that would cover the Taurus, or do the opposite. But it's working as it is, so I suppose we shouldn't complain!

The Fiesta saloon is only slightly longer than the hatch. Inside it's exactly the same. Same width, same leg room, same features. It's smaller than a Focus, so certainly no comparison with the Mondeo, let alone the Taurus which is even larger. If you want to cruise long distances with 6 foot+ adults in the front and back (and this is a normal requirement for the US), then a Fiesta (of either body style) won't really cut it. Also while some of the extra power is wasted by the greater weight, the engines are much larger than in the Fiesta (you'll never see the 160hp diesel or 200hp ecoboost on the Fiesta).

It's more than just the size - look in the larger (and more expensive) cars and you'll see more luxurious and high-tech features, higher quality materials, and a generally better environment (quieter).

As the other poster said, please take a few minutes to check your facts next time.

Alright, I didn't know about the inside room, I just saw the exterior size and thought it looked the same size as the Mondeo. It was a spur of the moment post really, I'll check my facts next time!

Wow, give the guy a break!

Taurus comments apart, the US just really seem to like sedans as opposed to hatchbacks. Similarly, they also love pick-up trucks for no reason. God I'm glad that I'm European.

I also agree that the Fiesta sedan looks hideous, as do more or less all sedans.

Yeah, perhaps I was a little harsh on the lad...

Car tastes certainly are very different around the world, and some of that is history/culture and some of it is the different environment.

So the US tends to see hatches as "cheap", but likes SUVs which are big hatches on fat tyres and see wagons (aka estates) as dated, but seems to like crossovers which are just wagons on stilts. And they just love their pickup trucks. But remember, on average US people are taller and heavier than us, they drive longer distances, and fuel is dirt cheap (little tax).

Australia is similar, but they have their thing for "utes" (cars with a pickup truck style backend).

They probably think us lot here in Europe are just as strange. Southern Europe tends to sell more estates and saloons than northern Europe where the hatch reigns supreme, unless it's a premium brand. And non-premium brand big cars with big engines just don't sell due to the cost of petrol/diesel.

Thanks Andrew. I think the reason Americans see Estates as dated is that their Sedans/Saloons are just as big as estates inside, so there's no reason for estates over there anymore! Here though Saloons are a bit smaller and Estates have larger interiors!

I quite like the sedan. It fits well in Ford's model range over there.

Incidentally, the US Fiesta hatchback isn't identical to the UK model. Check pics of it and you'll see it's put on a bit of weight around the front end in particular. ;)

The front overhang has been pushed out, that's for sure. The rear end has an extended bumper too, to comply with US safety regulations. Somehow they made the Fiesta a little bland, I much prefer the Euro model. The sedan isn't too bad, it suits their market and will suit the Australian market when it launches here next year. It's definitly not as good looking as the Fiesta hatch (Euro model) but there are a fair few small sedans that's look absolutely horrid.
